Building her rise to fame in 2012, Christina Perri has put together a collection of classic Christmas tunes, pairs an all-new seasonal staple, "Something About December" alongside unique renditions of such Yuletide favorites as The Carpenters' "Merry Christmas Darling" and Charles Brown's "Please Come Home For Christmas". Produced by multiple Grammy Award winner David Hodges (Evanescence, Kelly Clarkson), the 6-track collection is further highlighted by a new take on the John & Yoko/Plastic Ono Band classic, "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)", featuring choral contributions from such diverse artists as Michelle Branch, LP, Bushwalla, and Boys Like Girls' Martin Johnson.

Rita Reys was long ago billed as "Europe's First Lady of Jazz." A legend overseas, Reys was one of the top jazz singers in Europe from the mid-'50s to the turn of the millennium. In 1986, Rita recorded the Christmas album Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas with the Pim Jacobs Trio and the Metropole Orchestra conducted by Rogier van Otterloo.

"The Colours Of Spring" presents a band in the midst of radical reinvention. Remarkably, though, this 1986 outing doesn't carry the air of an awkward transitional album; in fact, it's arguably the British group's finest and most assured record. Working closely with producer/multi-instrumentalist Tim Friese-Greene, Talk Talk takes a sizable step away from its glossy early work, opting for a warm, organic sound that perfectly complements frontman Mark Hollis's plaintive vocals and pensive, existential lyrics.

At under an hour this mini-masterpiece should be in every opera-lover's collection. There are scores of versions available but I tend to favour those with a Dido of really starry vocal quality given that her torments lie at the heart of the opera and all other considerations are secondary: Purcell and his librettist Nathum Tate make little of Aeneas's psychology and the other roles are all supplementary, reflecting upon Dido's plight, even to the extent of some suggesting that the Sorceress is her alter ego.

Wonderland is the debut album by Erasure, recorded in 1985 soon after the duo's formation. It was released on 1 May 1986 by Sire Records in the USA and 2 June 1986 by Mute Records in the UK and Germany. Produced by Flood and featuring lush instrumentation and the soulful falsetto of newcomer singer Andy Bell, the album's sound is unmistakably Vince Clarke and this album is now acknowledged as a classic example of mid-80s synthpop.

Samantha Karen Fox (born 15 April 1966) is an English singer, songwriter, actress and former glamour model. In 1983, at age 16, she began appearing as a topless model on Page 3 of British tabloid newspaper The Sun, and continued as a Page 3 girl until 1986. During this time, she became the most popular pin-up girl of her era, as well as one of the most photographed British women of the 1980s…

Having stumbled with Primitive, Diamond attempted, with Headed for the Future, to re-establish himself as a contemporary artist, co-writing with Stevie Wonder, recording songs by Bryan Adams and Maurice White of Earth, Wind & Fire, and employing nine producers and nine recording studios. The result was a slight upturn in sales and Diamond's last singles-chart entry with the title track. But the album was also overblown and unfocused, record-making by committee, and Neil Diamond as an individual artist was getting lost in the process.

In 1955, Louis Armstrong, along with vocalist Velma Middleton, got into the studio to pay tribute to the late Fats Waller. All the standards are here: "Honeysuckle Rose," "Squeeze Me," "Ain't Misbehavin," rendered in fine and mellow but gently, genially swinging fashion. Armstrong's trumpet is superb and his voice carries the good-time spirit of Waller's music.

Renee Doria has a very unique voice and not a 'cookie cutter' the way a lot of sopranos nowadays sound–I can always tell it is her singing. I love her fast, fluttery vibrato and rich, warm, creamy, powerful middle voice. My only complaint is (as I've heard from some of the youtube posts) that sometimes she puts too much pressure on the notes above the staff and sounds like she is screaming them out. But here she sounds completely polished and nearly seamless from top to bottom.

Jazz / Hard Bop / Latin Jazz / Piano Trio

Pianist Michel Camilo did some intensive recording for the Japanese Suntan label over a two-day period in 1986. These five selections were in a trio format with Dave Weckl and Joel Rosenblatt alternating on drums and Anthony Jackson on bass throughout. Camilo displayed the Afro-Latin and Latin jazz side of his keyboard personality with slashing, attacking rhythms and phrases. He sacrificed some of his celebrated speed and thought more about ideas, pace, melodies, and harmonic creativity. Camilo's playing emerged as dominant as Jackson was content to work off his leads, and both drummers were equally willing to interact rather than try to influence the music's direction. As a result, Camilo got the chance to demonstrate his full range and did so in a workmanlike, effective manner.
