In several valuable and newly remastered releases under ‘The Decca Recitals’ banner, Eloquence has compiled tributes to several fine singers of the 1950s whose vocal personality particularly fitted the demands of art song: among them Jacques Jansen, Irma Kolassi and Oda Slobodskaya. They are now joined by an 82-minute, single-CD issue of the song recordings made for Decca by the Swiss baritone Heinz Rehfuss. Rehfuss was an authoritative and keenly sympathetic presence on sets of Pelléas et Melisande (directed by Ernest Ansermet and reissued on Eloquence and the St. Matthew Passion (with Hermann Scherchen) which have attained the status of classics. Other Ansermet reissues on which he features include rarities by Ravel and Stravinsky.

A cheerful little record, this, of three lightweight works played most exquisitely by very distinguished artists. In fact I am not sure that the chief distinction doesn't emanate from the orchestra: it is a while, as it happens, since I have heard the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and they seem to be playing here better than ever—sweet string tone, pure intonation, finely moulded phrasing, impeccably precise ensemble. Of the three works, the Cimarosa, written for two flutes (in which form it has several times been recorded), is the most attractive for its fluency, its melodiousness (the finale is a real charmer) and its elegant musical form; the Salieri seems by comparison rather carefully devised, though of course it has plenty of entertaining music. Carl Stamitz's piece takes itself more seriously, trying to be symphonic and taking less trouble about being tuneful—though the warm, galant slow movement makes very pleasing listening. The recorded sound is clear and true. (Stanley Sadie, Gramophone)

Heinz Chur was born in Essen (Germany), and for him music is a wonderful language - the language of ideas and emotions. The Piano Sonatas Nos 6 - 8 are examples of his tonal style. These sonatas were composed concurrently (e.g., the first movement of Piano Sonata No. 6 developed during the same year as the final movement of Piano Sonata No. 8), and in each case the completed sonatas were committed to writing within the space of a few days: Sonata No. 6 in 1984, Sonata No. 7 in 1985, and Sonata No. 8 in 1987…

Dubbed by wags "the singing secondary schoolteacher" as a result of his often didactic lyrics, German rocker Heinz Rudolf Kunze enjoyed his greatest success in the mid-'80s via the smashes "Dein Ist Mein Ganzes Herz" and "Mit Leib und Seele." Kunze remained one of German rock's biggest stars throughout the remainder of the decade, scoring a series of hit singles including "Alles Was Sie," "Größer als Wir Beide," and "Heul mit den Wölfen."…

On the second of July 2002, Anyone's Daughter played at a festival in Calw to honour the 125th birthday of the German author Hermann Hesse. The history of this German band has been more or less connected with Hesse. In 1981 they released the album Piktors Verwandlungen based upon 'Piktors transformations', a famous tale written by Hesse. They performed this 40-minute piece again in Calw, where Hesse was born in 1877. This time the band performed this piece together with the famous German rock poet and congenial speaker Heinz Rudolf Kunze. To experience this unique event many loyal fans of Anyone's Daughter from all over the country came to Calw…

Chris Hillman, whose credits include co-founding Rock and Roll Hall of Famers the Byrds, as well as the Flying Burrito Brothers, Manassas and Desert Rose Band, is truly one of the architects of American music. His newest solo work, Bidin' My Time, produced by Tom Petty and executive-produced by Herb Pedersen, captures a rarity: an icon who has never sounded better, making music with old friends for the sheer love of it. Collaborators and admirers from Hillman's storied career appear throughout the record: Tom Petty; Hillman's Byrds bandmates David Crosby and Roger McGuinn; the Heartbreakers' Benmont Tench, Mike Campbell, and Steve Ferrone; Desert Rose Band's John Jorgenson, Pedersen, and Jay Dee Maness; premier upright bassist Mark Fain; singer/guitarist Josh Jové; and fiddler Gabe Witcher.

For over two years, organist Chris Hazelton and his soulful septet, the Boogaloo 7, have held down a wildly successful residency every Friday night at Kansas City's acclaimed Green Lady Lounge. Expanding on the funky sounds popularized by Jimmy McGriff, Charles Earland, Lou Donaldson, and others, this group brings a mixture of original tunes and covers, both old and new, that excite and move audiences week after week. With two in-demand 45rpm singles already under their belt, the logical next step was a full length album, and this one catches them in their element: live at the club they call home.
