David Hazeltine is one of many accomplished jazz pianists based in New York City, developing an international following with his recordings for labels in Europe and Japan, in addition to the U.S. Some of his best work has been for Sharp Nine, which released his debut CD in 1995, several tracks of which focused on piano trios. The New Classic Trio features his regular drummer Joe Farnsworth, and the seasoned veteran George Mraz (who has recorded as member of the Oscar Peterson Trio, the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra, and the Stan Getz Quartet, in addition to his work as a leader).

A desperately under rated band which has had many line-ups, all of them led by the brilliant Dave Cousins - guitarist and vocalist. The Strawbs sound is immediately identifiable and includes elements of rock, folk, and classical influences. First and foremost they are brilliant musicians, and this DVD showcases some of their best tracks…

Prince spent the latter half of the '80s courting the pop audience, and by the time of Graffiti Bridge, he had lost much of his R&B fan base. As a response, he formed the New Power Generation and recorded Diamonds and Pearls, his first record to reconnect with the urban audience since 1999, as well as his first to acknowledge the hip-hop revolution. The New Power Generation is a more skilled band than the Revolution, and they are able to make Prince's funk jazzier, particularly on "Willing and Able," the breezy "Strollin'" and "Walk Don't Walk." It's clear that these subtly textured songs are where his heart is at…

Van Morrison - The New York Sessions 1967 (2017)  Music

Label: Easy Action / Troubadour | Release Year: 2017

The 1967 New York Sessions are comprised of the (much compiled) recordings Van Morrison made for Bang! after his split from Them. Teaming with Brill Building vet producer Bert Berns, Morrison's wild-eyed lyricism is often a tight fit with Berns' straight-ahead commercial sound (see the silly but fun "Chick-a-Boom" for an example). Still, a number of great songs can be found here, including the all-time great "Brown Eyed Girl," "The Back Room," "He Ain't Give You None," and "Ro Ro Rosey." Early versions of tracks from Astral Weeks, "T.B. Sheets" and "Madame George," also appear. Despite Van's objections to being a pop artist, the conflict between the two styles makes for some very interesting and invigorating listening. These sessions aren't vital to the casual Morrison fan, but anyone whose love of the man goes beyond the hits needs to add these to their collection.
