You might have thought that, since the 1998 merger of MCA and PolyGram, creating Universal Music, brought the hits Cher scored in the 1970s and '80s for Kapp, MCA, Casablanca, and Geffen under one roof, the next time they got around to doing a best-of they would combine all those catalogs. No such luck. In the wake of Cher's 1999 comeback with "Believe," Geffen issued its own comp, If I Could Turn Back Time: Cher's Greatest Hits. So, when MCA came to compile The Best of Cher as part of the midline-priced 20th Century Masters/The Millennium Collection series, they simply took the 1974 MCA Greatest Hits album, stripped off two B-sides, and added the 1979 Casablanca disco hit "Take Me Home"…

In 1965, flush from the success of Sonny & Cher's "I Got You Babe," Cher earned her first major solo contract with Liberty/Imperial (she had previously recorded only a few singles under aliases). With Sonny Bono enlisted as producer, Cher lit up the pop charts with the smash "All I Really Want to Do," and its follow-up, "I Go to Sleep." Although the next three years saw only inconsistent chart entries, her recordings were interesting and frequently as good as the leading lights of folk-pop, the Mamas & the Papas. And she covered most of the best folk songwriters of the time Dylan, Tim Hardin, John Sebastian, Paul Simon, and Jackie DeShannon. Add points for a few interesting crossovers of pop songs like "Sunny" or "Alfie" (the latter a Top 40 hit), but subtract some for a few misguided covers ("It's Not Unusual" prime among them), and The Best of the Imperial Recordings 1965-1968 is revealed as a near-necessity for '60s folk-rock fans. It includes all of her album debut, All I Really Want to Do, as well as the vast majority of her four subsequent LPs for the label (The Sonny Side of Cher, Cher, With Love, Cher, Backstage).

This collection contains all of Sonny's important British and American hits (with and without Cher) from 1964 to 1967, although some minor hits are missing. The classic hits here are I got you babe (number one in Britain and America), Laugh at me (a Sonny solo), Just you, Baby don't go, What now my love, Little man (number one in several European countries) and The beat goes on. There are many other wonderful songs including Sing c'est la vie, which was number one in Belgium but didn't chart at all (maybe wasn't released) in Britain or America.

While it's true that Oscar Peterson compilations appeared with regularity form the early '60s on, only a few of them – as with most recording artists – have any real merit. This two-disc collection from the Concord Music Group's Telarc label, is one of them. Appearing less than a year before his death, this compilation concentrates on recordings issued from the '50s through the middle of the '80s on Dizzy Gillespie's Pablo label, and those made for Telarc between 1990 and 2000. Many live dates are included here from both labels, including "Tenderly" with Herb Ellis and Ray Brown at the J.A.T.P. concerts in Japan; the trio dates at Zardi's in 1955 ("How High the Moon"), in Copenhagen with Joe Pass, Stéphane Grappelli, and Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen in 1979, and Mickey Roker in 1979 ("Nuages")….
