Burkina Faso - «Pays Lobi, Xylophone de Funérailles»
Genre: Folk Africa | MP3 160 Kbps, VBR | Label: Ocora | 91 Mb

A collection of ritual funeral songs from the repertoire of Lobi (also here referring to the Birifor) songs for the jolonbuo (similar to the balafon in many ways). The music is deceptively simple at times, and richly complex at times, sometimes occurring together. Smaller percussion items are added to the music, as is the bembe drum, which is played throughout funeral ceremonies (up to two days straight). For those wishing to learn about the Lobi rituals, this wouldn't be a bad place to start. (AMG)

The fertile filmmaking community of Burkina Faso gives birth to another stark, social realist tale with this feature from director Pierre Yameogo. Me and My White Pal concerns the hand-to-mouth existence of Mamadi, an African student studying in France who becomes embroiled with violent gangsters when he intercepts a drug package and attempts to profit from it. While tending to cars in his menial parking-garage job, Mamadi discovers the stash, which his "white pal" persuades him to try to sell. Once he does, the twosome find themselves running all the way back to Burkina Faso to escape the dealers. ~ Michael Hastings, All Movie Guide

Selected rare Togolese recordings featured here from between 1971 to 1981. According to label Hot Casa, finding these tracks and their rights holders was quite the task, involving numerous trips all over the west African country bordered by Ghana , Benin and Burkina Faso. They have selected 13 tracks, which they've charmingly described as 'a snapshot of some hundreds of rare and often forgotten tapes from the most prolific, professional and exciting phase of the country's recording history'. Highlights on this compilation not limited to: Akofa Akoussah's sultry and bittersweet crooning on "I Tcho Tchass", the life affirming Afrobeat vibes of Aime Orchis Mathey's very obscure "Tralala Vo Dou" and of course the very funky and groovy hoedown that is Adamah & Agbote's "Dzo Le Gbo Nye" .

French musician Jean-Philippe Rykiel contacted us about a unique type of African balafon in which each key had “snares” that vibrated when played, giving it a interesting buzzing quality. Sometimes called a “gyil”(JEE-le), it's usually found in parts of northern Ghana, Burkina Faso, and south-eastern Mali. Hardwood keys are suspended over calabash gourds.
