In the sixth and final volume of his complete works for piano by Brahms, the Irish pianist Barry Douglas - which one recalls Rafla first prize at the Tchaikovsky Competition in 1986, the first non-Russian since Van Cliburn in 1958 - we present the composer historian, arranger and teacher. Historian, he is with his rooms in the old style - gigue, sarabande, canon -; and at the same time, arranger with the gavotte from Gluck. Arranger, he is with his own Hungarian Dances rewritten for piano solo (the original being for piano four hands), and in Walk Rákóczy (also known as the Hungarian March) from Berlioz; and at the same time teacher since the studies we present Douglas are written respectively by Chopin, Bach and Weber - the latter especially in a pretty sneaky arrangement of the Chaconne, originally for solo violin by Brahms for the left hand alone .

The four works in this second of three volumes devoted to Enescu's piano music range over a period of more than 30 years. The earliest is the joyful, ebullient Suite "Des cloches sonores", Op. 10 which covers a wide expressive range including use of the melancholy Romanian song, the doina. The Piano Sonata No. 3, Op. 24 is a mercurial, puckish works, both spiritred and contemplative, and the Piece sure le nom de Faure is a charming souvenir from one composer to another.

This recording aims to cast a spotlight on some of the remarkable, yet forgotten music written for the solo violin between c.1840 and 1919. The long shadow of JS Bach and his own Partitas and Sonatas for Solo Violin looms over some of the works contained on this disc, yet many of the movements liberate themselves from this influence, displaying a resourcefulness and an array of moods that draw the listener into what can otherwise be the precariously narrow sound world of the solo violin. Many of the pieces have never been recorded before and some, particularly the Second Godard Sonata and Saint-Lubin Fantaisie, deserve to take their place beside Bach, Bartók and Ysaÿe as interesting additions to the central works in the solo violin repertoire.
