When Bob Dylan dropped Time Out of Mind in 1997, it was a rollicking rockabilly and blues record, full of sad songs about mortality, disappointment, and dissolution. 2001 brought Love and Theft, which was also steeped in stomping blues and other folk forms. It was funny, celebratory in places and biting in others. Dylan has been busy since then: he did a Victoria's Secret commercial, toured almost nonstop, was in a couple films – Larry Charles' Masked and Anonymous and Martin Scorsese's documentary No Direction Home – and published the first of a purported three volumes of his cagey, rambling autobiography, Chronicles. Lately, he's been thinking about Alicia Keys.

If The Times They Are a-Changin' isn't a marked step forward from The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, even if it is his first collection of all originals, it's nevertheless a fine collection all the same. It isn't as rich as Freewheelin', and Dylan has tempered his sense of humor considerably, choosing to concentrate on social protests in the style of "Blowin' in the Wind." …

The Times They Are a-Changin' is Bob Dylan's 3rd album, released in 1964 by Columbia Records.Produced by Tom Wilson, it is the singer-songwriter's first collection to feature only original compositions. The album consists mostly of stark, sparsely-arranged story songs concerning issues such as racism, poverty, and social change. The title track is one of Dylan's most famous; many felt that it captured the spirit of social and political upheaveal that characterized the 1960s. Some critics and fans were not quite as taken with the album as a whole, relative to his previous work, for its lack of humor or musical diversity. Still, The Times They Are a-Changin' entered the United States chart at twenty, eventually going gold, and belatedly reaching four in the United Kingdom in 1965.

Bob Dylan, the eternal enigma, comes again out of nowhere with this studio album, his 33rd, and his third in this decade after the brilliant Love and Theft (2001) and Modern Times (2006) albums. While both those albums' musical themes centered around Americana and blues, this album takes a new turn. "Together Through Life" starts off with a blazing Tex-Mex-themed "Beyond Here Lies Nothing", and it really sets the table for the rest of the album. Veering away mostly from the blues-themed and heavy "Modern Times", the album feels lighter in approach and atmosphere, as in "My Wife's Home Town", where you can hear Dylan crack a smile actually. The Tex-Mex themes are never far away, as in "If You Ever Go To Houston". Interestingly, Dylan co-wrote all but one of the songs' lyrics with Robert Hunter, he of Grateful Dead fame (co-writing with Jerry Garcia). Equally noteworthy in my book is that Dylan's vocals are as clear as I've heard them in many, many years. The album's closer "It's All Good" sums up the album perfectly.
