"The sound is spectacular in whatever format you choose but the jump to Blu-ray is, as in vision, a leap forward. None of which would matter were the performances not also uniformly excellent: This is a superbly alive performance of the Britten Simple Symphony, making it sound a much more ambitiouswork than usual. A demonstration recording!" ~Grammophone

Michel Polnareff is a French singer-songwriter, who was popular in France from the mid-1960s until the early 1990s with his last original album, Kama-Sutra. Since then, without any proper new original album, he is still critically acclaimed and occasionally tours in France. Polnareff sold over three million albums and four million singles in France to date. On 12 May 2006, Michel Polnareff announced that he would be giving a series of concerts between 2 March and 14 March 2007. Ticket sales rocketed, showing that Polnareff has not lost his gleam. On Bastille Day, 2007, Polnareff gave a free concert…

"…In spite of Brecht’s often heavy-handedness, the opera has plenty of pertinent points to make today. The Blu-ray looks great, even in the many very dark scenes, and the impact of the lossless surround track is excellent. I find that of the three productions, I’ll stick with this one now, and not just because it’s Blu-ray. You may want to keep the English subtitles on the screen to appreciate the details of the lyrics, which are not always discernible. 5 Stars." ~audiophile-audition

There have been a number of very fine performances on CD and DVD of of this marvellous timeless work - arguably the greatest masterpiece in the history of classical ballet - but a really good Blu ray disc is surely the visual holy grail! In my view this is by far the best overall presentation of Swan Lake to date. The playing and sound are magical under Gergiev's assured hand and the dancing is superb. It largely uses the traditional Petipa / Ivanov choreography. None of the sexual mannerisms that made Nureyev's dancing and choreography so distinctive, and the casting, costumes and sets are wonderfully conceived. No video performances include all the music Tchaikovsky wrote but this performance at 129 minutes seems quite complete…

George Thorogood makes some interesting comments in the brief interview included on this Blu-ray as a supplement, where he muses about needing to experience the "buzz" of energy from the audience whenever he walks into a room, as that is (according to him, anyway) the sign that his relevance as an artist is still alive and kicking. While Thorogood has had a long and successful career, he hasn't experienced a Top 10 single since the early nineties…

…These performances come together brilliantly in this impressive recording. With the nicely balanced Met orchestra reproduced effectively here, the sound sometimes evokes the carefully voiced balances of studio recordings. Yet this is a live performance in which the musicians’ fine interactions add to the excitement. While some would hold that Il trovatore requires the finest principals for an effective performance, this recording also suggests that the sense of theatricality Verdi infused in this score affects the singers and drives them to give the intensely moving performances found in this exceptional release. More than that, the visual dimensions are enhanced with shots and angles that take the viewer to the stage. It is difficult not to become involved in this production through this well-crafted disc.

…Songs from the Road offers the chance to see one of the most enigmatic and lyrically brilliant artists working in the realm of popular music. Cohen has been such a reclusive figure for so long it's a bit bracing to see him, warts and all, in this amazing amalgamation of performances from venues near and far. Though the image quality here isn't great, the audio quality more than makes up for it, and this Blu-ray is highly recommended.
