The Big Four is an expression designating the 4 most important U.S. metal bands like Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer and Anthrax. These are also the 4 groups best known for Thrash metal. It is since 1984 that young fans of Thrash Metal have begun to speculate on a concert that would combine the Big Four. Over the years, and after a few setbacks and tensions between groups, this vision of a reunion faded. It would take twenty-five years before new rumors, stronger and with more presence on many sites and fan communities, resurfaced. On the occasion of the Sonisphere Festival 2010, the legendary Big Four shared the bill for the first time. This already legendary concert was immortalized for giving us the Big Four: Live From Sofia, Bulgaria.

To call this CD (a reissue of a Pablo date) an all-star session would be an understatement. Joining pianist Oscar Peterson, guitarist Joe Pass, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Bobby Durham are three classic trumpeters: Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry, and Freddie Hubbard. They clearly inspire each other (Gillespie flew in from the East Coast specifically for this date) and the music ("Daahoud," "Just Friends," the new blues "Chicken Wings," and a torrid version of "The Champ") has plenty of exciting moments. Other performances from the same date can be heard on The Alternate Blues, another LP reissued on CD through the Original Jazz Classics imprint.

One of Duke Ellington's finest small group sessions from his final decade was this frequently exciting quartet date with guitarist Joe Pass, bassist Ray Brown and drummer Louie Bellson. Ellington's percussive style always sounded modern and he comes up with consistently strong solos on such numbers as "Love You Madly," "The Hawk Talks" and especially "Cotton Tail," easily keeping up with his younger sidemen. Highly recommended. ~ AllMusic

This ("audiophile" or better "High Fidelity" , in my opinion) record was made in 1973, and I have other records made by Duke in the '20s and '30s. His age does nothing to slow him down or make him boring, in fact the group can be quite exciting at times with Ellington pushing them along. But overall, I would say the record is relaxing, every song is good. Ray Brown is considered by many one of the most important bass players, and one of the best. Joe Pass's solo albums speak for themselves, simply titled Virtuoso, and he displays his virtuosic talent beautifully on all 7 tracks. Louis Bellson scats his way through his drum solos, pushing the tempo and always reacting with perfection. Duke Ellington might be jazz's most significant composer, he was also a true leader and performer. If you like feel-good music, you will like this album.

Milt Jackson and Oscar Peterson are two of the most formidable swingers in jazz. When they collaborated, the swing was more than doubled. This concert under Jackson's leadership at the 1975 Montreux Jazz Festival reunited them for the first time in years. The recording captures their pleasure at performing together again and the excitement and appreciation of the Montreux audience in hearing them. The album is dominated by the exultation of their playing in up-tempo numbers like "Mack the Knife," Lee Morgan's blues "Speed Ball," and a brisk "Stella by Starlight." They provide contrast in a pair of superb ballad performances on "Everything Must Change" and "Nature Boy." Peterson achieves on Ahmad Jamal's "Night Mist Blues" an intensity remarkable even for him. Peterson's bass stalwart Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and drummer Mickey Roker, a Jackson favorite, join in the fun.
