Joshua Rifkin made three LPs of Joplin for Nonesuch between 1970 and 1974 – a total of 24 rags. The first LP soon became an unanticipated bestseller; the other two followed at a leisurely pace, since Rifkin was also a busy musicologist; and meanwhile the film, "The Sting", helped to cement the Joplin revival by bringing ragtime to the widest public. This collection of 17 rags is carefully balanced and invariably as musically conscientious as if he were playing Mozart. These performances of Rifkin’s have stood repetition for some 25 years. "The Entertainer", for example, sounds just as fresh here as when it was written. There are times when Rifkin’s rare ornamentation in repeats seems slightly stilted, but he always respects the style of the period and there’s nothing jarring. And now – at this distance – these historic performances are successfully transferred to CD. –Peter Dickinson

"Because we want to remember her spirit"

Rock and roll's first female superstar, Janis Joplin showed that women could be rock singers. she is remembered as the best white blues singer of the 1960s. Famous for her incendiary stage performances, her masochistic tango with the bottle, her tumultuous love life, and her fatal dalliance with drugs, her musical legacy is also a part of Austin's history – how the disheveled folkie/UT student playing at west campus hootenannies and Kenneth Threadgill's bar on North Lamar took off for San Francisco with some other Texans in the Sixties and changed the history of rock & roll.

Although he did not invent ragtime, Joplin (1868-1917) is the best-known exponent of this type of jazz, with its characteristic syncopated rhythms. Berlin (Ragtime: A Musical and Cultural History) shows how Joplin launched his career in the black social clubs of Sedalia, Mo.; achieved success with the Maple Leaf Rag; and went on to win the respect of whites as well as his fellow African Americans, composing numerous rags and two operas, A Guest of Honor (now lost) and Treemonisha.

Scott Joplin, the "King of Ragtime" music, was born near Linden, Texas on November 24, 1868. Although Joplin's music was popular and he received modest royalties during his lifetime, he did not receive recognition as a serious composer for more than fifty years after his death. Then, in 1973, his music was featured in the motion picture, The Sting, which won and Academy Award for its film score. Three years later, in 1976, Joplin's opera Treemonisha won the coveted Pulitzer Prize.
