Harmonica Blues, Modern Electric Blues | Music Club #MCCD 400

Music Club has done it again with this amazing retrospective of blues guitarist and harmonicat Charlie Musselwhite. The Mississippi-born, Memphis-raised, and Chicago-trained bluesman has issued so many strong recordings it's a wonder that this isn't a box set. But if you have to boil it down to a single disc for a budget price, this is the one to have without question. Contained within its 20 selections are tracks from his two 1970s Arhoolie albums, Takin' My Time and Goin' Back Down South, from 1971 and 1974, respectively; The Harmonica According to Charlie Musselwhite, issued first on Kicking Mule and later on Blind Pig in 1978 and 1994, respectively; and finally from his Alligator albums, Ace of Harps (1990 and a Grammy winner), Signature (1992 and Grammy nominated), and In My Time (1994, also Grammy nominated).

He may never have been as well known as his Sun label mates, but he certainly deserves to be remembered for more than just his 70s ballad hits. Those in the know always knew how good Charlie Rich was. As Sam Phillips - the man who discovered Elvis and in whose studio rock & roll was effectively born - testified later: “There was not one human being I knew who was more talented than Charlie Rich.”

Although a youngster compared to most of his Austin friends, guitarist, singer, and songwriter Charlie Sexton has already had several phases to his career. Sexton, raised in Austin, TX, made his debut with Pictures for Pleasure in 1985 at age 16. He followed that up with a self-titled second album when he was 20. Because word of his reputation as a prodigy guitar player spread far and wide, he found himself an in-demand session player while still in his late teens, and he had the opportunity to record with Ron Wood, Keith Richards, and Bob Dylan.

Many people tend to think of Charlie Chaplin as a great movie clown, actor, writer, director or even producer—but few people think of him as a composer of music. This is understandable, since the majority of his films were silent, but even those silent films had music playing while the movie was being shown—and Charlie Chaplin composed many of those tunes, especially for his feature length films.
