Few orchestras that work without head; in the case of any new Swiss set CHAARTS (= Chamber Artists) who offers us here its collegial and intimate vision of the Beethoven Violin Concerto with solo in the equally young, equally Swiss Sebastian Bohren whose career has already far beyond the borders of Switzerland. We hear the concerto with a staff quite moderate, sixteen strings over the winds, which offers a highly woody tone, a far cry from what is heard so often with too orchestras supplied strings.

Noel Mewton-Wood’s (1922-53) journey from underestimated virtuoso to present-day icon is cause for both celebration and irony. Glowing testimonials to his ‘genius’ (Sir Malcolm Sargent) from Myra Hess, Beecham, Schnabel, Bliss, Hindemith and Britten were countered by indifference from the major record labels and concert managements, a situation that doubtless contributed to his suicide at the age of 31. Behind an ebullient surface, Mewton-Wood was a romantic idealist, susceptible to depression and mood-swings. So it is hardly surprising to find the dichotomy reflected in performances which alternate a luminous poetic delicacy with a rare energy and bravura. [[i]Bryce Morrison, Gramophone, November 2003]

From the Notes: Although every truly great pianist has his own tone resulting from his total intrepretation, Gieseking perhaps had the most readily recognizable and the longest sustaining tone of all. His was a pure, transparent, nonpercussive tone of great dynamic range resulting from his phenomenal ear for prolonging vibrations, his masterful pedaling and his panlike inwardly-felt melodic outpouring. Music flowed from him effortlessly and enthusiastically, always colored by his innate sense of the exquisite - a beautiful landscape, the myriad colors of a butterfly wing or a flower. Yet for him tone was uncomplicated: "I have to hear beautiful sounds from my piano". written by Dean Elder

From the notes: "It's hard to believe he's dead - hard to believe that such a mountain of a musician, who commanded the piano and its literature like few others in our time, who was a paragon of artistic integrity admired and loved by audiences and colleagues alike, could turn out to gbe mortal after all. But only the man has left us: Sviatoslav Richter the artists, for collectors of classical recordings at least, has never been more alive, more present on the music scene that he is today." When Nikolaus Harnoncourt retired from the stage in December last year, it was his expressed wish to release the broadcast recording of his last project, Beethoven s monumental Missa solemnis as his personal legacy. The Missa solemnis concerts at the Styriarte Festival Graz and the Salzburg Festival in summer 2015 were his last public performances. This recording of Beethoven s late masterpiece was made from material captured at the Graz concerts and rehearsals.
