It was the early 1970’s and, musically speaking, it was all going on in the North Beach neighborhood of San Francisco. The Summer of Love had gone up in smoke, and around Grant and Columbus Streets, the remnants were everywhere. Hippies, beatniks (the movement was spawned in North Beach), college kids, strippers and barkers going to work on Broadway…and musicians of every stripe…

Alternative Rock / Psychedelic Rock

Beefheart's first proper studio album is a much more accessible, pop-inflected brand of blues-rock than the efforts that followed in the late '60s – which isn't to say that it's exactly normal and straightforward. Featuring Ry Cooder on guitar, this is blues-rock gone slightly askew, with jagged, fractured rhythms, soulful, twisting vocals from Van Vliet, and more doo wop, soul, straight blues, and folk-rock influences than he would employ on his more avant-garde outings…

It may seem surprising that this is the first complete recording of Gluck's one-act opera (or, as he called it, serenata teatrale) La corona (The Crown) after more than 240 years. The work was never performed during Gluck's lifetime; written for the name day of Francis I, husband of Habsburg empress Maria Theresa, it was rendered irrelevant by the dedicatee's death in 1765. The listener will discover soon enough why no one has thought to revive the work since then.

Javier Vargas and the Vargas Blues Band return with a new project: Cambalache & Bronca (2017 KZoo Music). Recorded in Spanish, it includes legendary songs by Argentinian artists and a song he wrote with his dear friend Manolo Tena when they recorded the album Spanish Blood together: “No Te Rindas”, which will also be one of the singles of the album. This song also features singer and guitarist José Rulo (voice in “No te rindas” and “Sucio y desprolijo”), who will also take part of the tour along with other reputed musicians and members of the band: Luis Mayo (voice and bass), Juan Carlos Mendoza (bass), Miguel Angel Cap (drums), Oscar Quesada (drums), Jota Marsán (drums), Gustavo Segura (drums), Peter Kunst (drums). The album also features Litto Nebbia (voice in the “Viento dile a la lluvia”).

In 1739 William Boyce (1711-1779) composed his 'Ode for St. Cecelia's Day' to a text by his friend, the amateur poet, John Lockman. In writing this ode Boyce followed in the footsteps of his two chief teachers, Maurice Greene and Johann Pepusch who also wrote music in St. Cecelia's honor. However, his music is more reminiscent of Handel which is not surprising, since while the much younger Boyce was becoming prominent in London's lively music scene, Handel was the most celebrated composer of the time anywhere.

When Darren Hayman (Hefner) and Emma Kupa (Standard Fare/Mammoth Penguins) decided to make a duets record, we knew the results would be great, but we didn’t expect them to be THIS great. Gathering together a rhythm section consisting of Michael Wood (Whoa Melodic/Singing Adams) on bass and Cat Loye (Fever Dream) on drums, The Hayman Kupa band create brash, bold and effortlessly melodic power pop.
