It's hard to imagine what A&M had in mind, releasing a live album by a group that hadn't really broken in the U.S. yet. Nevertheless, the record actually spent eight weeks in the charts, but it sold only to diehards. Although it's an appealing enough set, featuring covers like "Cherry Oh Baby" and "I Got You, Babe" (minus Chrissie Hynde), and such British hits as "If It Happens Again" and "Sing Our Song," it's hard to imagine it doing any better.

Uriah Heep were the first western rock band to perform live in Russia. There had been previous visits by pop artists such as Billy Joel, and Cliff Richard (the great Sir Clifford, for it is he), but not by a rock band. The band undertook a series of gigs in December 1987 in the Olympiskij Stadium in Moscow playing to 180,000 people over 10 consecutive nights…

When Asia reunited in 1990, they kicked off their tour with a concert in Nottingham, England, which was eventually released as a promo-only CD called Now. Seven years later, Now: Nottingham Live was officially released, and by that time their audience had dwindled to just hardcore devotees – in other words, anyone with an interest in the band will find something on Now to enjoy, whether it's the intricate arrangements or the winding guitar solos. Even so, they will have to admit that the performance is tentative, with the members attempting to readjust to the natural rhythms of playing together. So while it may be a historic concert for Asia, it doesn't necessarily capture them at their best.

Uriah Heep were pioneers in taking music to the rock-starved former Iron Curtain countries. And where better to start than in the heart of the Soviet Union? The band wowed Moscow’s Olympic Stadium in December 1987, playing ten consecutive nights and proving Mick Box’s merry men – still active today – rank alongside Zeppelin, Purple and Sabbath as global hard-rock trailblazers.

Well played, fresh sounding, and highly energetic, Asia's Live in Moscow proved to be their best on-stage album, captured during their 1990 European tour. Featuring John Wetton, Carl Palmer, Geoff Downes, and newcomer Pat Thrall (most notably from the Pat Travers Band) replacing Steve Howe on guitar, the band sounds enthusiastically sharp where it matters most. Howe's absence is indeed apparent, but the band comes through on the biggies like "Heat of the Moment" and "Only Time Will Tell," while giving secondary hits like "Don't Cry," "Go," and "Time Again" new life. Geoff Downes teases the audience throughout his keyboard solo, playing an acoustical version of "Video Killed the Radio Star" from his days with the Buggles…
