Chamber music has always formed the heart of Maria João Pires’s musicianship. Indeed, she has often commented that she is happier working with others than performing on her own. “Not sharing a stage is very difficult for me,” she once remarked (in an interview for ArtsJournal in 2012) “You are apart from the group, apart from community, apart from everything. You become different and special. And, if you become different and special, you’re alone.”

He was one of the finest virtuoso classical guitarists of the 20th century and his DG albums are regarded as reference recordings. This 5 CD Original Jackets collection brings together all of his concerto recordings for the Yellow Label, recorded between 1969 and 1979. The repertoire ranges from Vivaldi’s Lute Concertos adapted for guitar, to works written for Yepes and other leading guitarists of the 20th century.

Although there are three original compositions, including the title track, featured here, the majority of Possessed is made up of string quartet remakes of Kraftwerk songs. Given that the precision of the German electronic band's songs bear no small resemblance to Baroque classicism, the Balanescu Quartet needs to do little to make their covers work than to play them straight.
