For this 1958 LP, Anita O'Day sings standards associated with other musicians, including "Four" (Miles Davis), "Early Autumn" (Stan Getz), "Four Brothers" (Woody Herman), "Sing, Sing, Sing" (Benny Goodman and Gene Krupa) and "Peanut Vendor" (Stan Kenton). Some of the material is unusual for a singer to interpret, but O'Day, one of the top jazz vocalists of the decade, improvises when the lyrics are not that strong (or barely exist). The backup by the Russ Garcia Orchestra is not all that memorable, but the focus is entirely on the vocalist, and O'Day really comes through.

Rhino's 2002 compilation The Best of Anita Baker contains all of her hits – both the pop crossovers and songs that were big only on the R&B charts. Many of these songs are presented in their single edits, not the album versions, which is a plus, since these are the versions that were played on the radio. Although it is true that nothing Anita Baker did was ever as sublime as Rapture, she did continually turn out fine adult contemporary and urban soul ballads throughout the late '80s and early '90s, all of which are here, making this not just a good summary/introduction, but a nice disc of highlights for those searching for more than Rapture. –Stephen Thomas Erlewine

With her classy, refined brand of romantic soul, Anita Baker was one of the definitive quiet storm singers of the '80s. Gifted with a strong, supple alto, Baker was influenced not only by R&B, but jazz, gospel, and traditional pop, which gave her music a distinctly adult sophistication. Smooth and mellow, but hardly lifeless, it made her one of the most popular romantic singers of her time.

Erik believes he has the solution to Anita's problems: to let her move into an artist's communal experiment, of which he is already a member. The common interest of this collective is largely the performing of classical music. Anita's prosence in the collective, however, is regarded by some of the other girls as highly provocative. Swedish cult-film starlet Christina Lindberg appears opposite international film star Stellan Skarsgård in director Torgny Wickman's controversial erotic drama. Anita (Lindberg) is a young girl whose troubled childhood and neglectful parents have left her hungering for love. A psychologically unstable nymphet driven to pleasures of the flesh, Anita soon finds a kindred soul in kindly university student Erik (Skarsgård). As Erik and Anita's relationship grows increasingly intimate, the sympathetic student attempts to help his troubled friend work through her many problems. Anita is more than willing to open up to Erik, and upon listening as his new friend recounts all the details of her sordid past it becomes increasingly obvious to Erik that the only way for Anita to conquer her nymphomania is to experience a genuine orgasm.

Born Anita Belle Colton in Chicago, Illinois on October 18, 1919. Anita died on Thanksgiving morning November 23, 2006. O’Day got her start as a teen. She eventually changed her name to O’Day and in the late 1930’s began singing in a jazz club called the Off- Beat, a popular hangout for musicians like band leader and drummer Gene Krupa. In 1941 she joined Krupa’s band, and a few weeks later Krupa hired trumpeter Roy Eldridge. O’Day and Eldridge had great chemistry on stage and their duet “Let Me Off Uptown” became a million-dollar-seller, boosting the popularity of the Krupa band. Also that year, “Down Beat” magazine named O’Day “New Star of the Year” and, in 1942, she was selected as one of the top five big band singers.

In his native Australia, singer/songwriter Paul Kelly is accorded the same kind of reverence and respect Gordon Lightfoot and Bruce Cockburn receive here in Canada, and deservedly so: The 62-year-old has produced a formidable body of work over the past 35 years. Kelly's late '80s albums with his bands the Coloured Girls and the Messengers were his commercial peak, but solo records since then have remained of high quality, too. They've often leaned to bluegrass and folk, but Life Is Fine goes back to his earlier roots-rock sound. He's recruited a full band, including nephew Dan Kelly on guitar, while longtime comrades Vika and Linda Bull are featured extensively on harmony vocals. Kelly's a democratic bandleader, giving the sisters a lead vocal on a tune apiece (the bluesy "My Man's Got a Cold" and "Don't Explain," respectively), adding variety but disrupting the album's flow a touch.
