70s magic from Percy Faith – two albums presented here in their quadrophonic mixes! "Clair" is a really wonderful album from Percy Faith – part of a handful of sweet 70s sides that really had him sounding a lot more groovy than before. "Joy" has the Percy Faith sound opening up in warm, mature modes for the 70s – still a fair bit of strings, but also maybe more of that careful couching of sound that could make 70s easy listening so different from the sound of a decade before! Some of the tunes here are a nice surprise – and include pop and soundtrack numbers that further take Percy into fresh territory – titles that include "Shaft", "Diamonds Are Forever", and more.

Teddy Pendergrass finally made it back to the top in 1988, when the title track from this album spent two weeks at the head of the R&B list. The song even got mild pop attention, and the album was the first since his accident to really reflect the new Pendergrass sound. He sang in a slower, somber, yet appealing way quite different from the swaggering, openly sexual/macho posturing of the late '70s and early '80s. This was a weary but not beaten Pendergrass, whose manner and delivery underscored the resilient theme in Joy's lyrics.

A celebration of some of the greatest female jazz singers of the 20th century. It takes an unflinching and revealing look at what it actually took to be a jazz diva during a turbulent time in America's social history - a time when battle lines were being constantly drawn around issues of race, gender and popular culture. The documentary tracks the diva's difficult progress as she emerges from the tough, testosterone-fuelled world of the big bands of the 30s and 40s, to fill nightclubs and saloons across the US in the 50s and early 60s as a force in her own right.

Recorded in 1971, Tears of Joy is a Don Ellis classic. The sheer musical strength of this ensemble is pretty much unparalleled in his career. The trumpeter/leader had backed off - a bit - from some of his outlandish and beautifully excessive use of strange and unconventional time signatures, though there is no lack of pioneering experimentalism in tone, color, arrangement, or style. This double LP/CD features a string quartet, a brass octet (four trumpets, tuba, bass trombone, trombone, and French horn), four winds, and a rhythm section boasting two drummers, a percussionist, a bassist, and the Bulgarian jazz piano wizard Milcho Leviev…

This album is a unique offering from the inimitable Kishori Amonkar. To survive is an animal instinct. To conquer is a base human desire. Samarpan or to surrender is the first act of being truly human, the first footstep towards attaining the divine. Surrender is not supplication. Surrender is the act of freeing oneself from the trap of the human design. To surrender is to let go of the belief that I am on my own, and I am my only protector. To surrender is to dive into the ocean of conviction that life is a divine design, and I can play in that pool of divine love like a child.
