For Kluge, this evidence of a haunted, inerasable palimpsest of tragic, forgotten history is an unspoken reality that continues to shape Germany's unreconciled, postwar collective consciousness - a nation eager to put its turbulent and ignominious past behind and re-emerge internationally as an enlightened and formidable economic world power (enabled by an economic miracle that would lead to the implementation of a liberal guest worker program during the 1960-70s).

This film combines both black-and-white and color photography to tell the story of a circus beset with financial woes. Leni (Hannelore Hoger), the director of a circus, has just lost her father in a trapeze accident. She tries to keep the circus out of debt and vows to continue the performances under the big top. Helped by a small and unexpected inheritance, Leni has high hopes of keeping the circus operating. She must decide if her dedication to the show is realistic or merely wishful thinking. Curt Jurgens appears as the animal trainer Mackensen in this symbolic but slow-moving feature. The film took the Gold Lion award at the 1968 Venice Film Festival.

The German filmmaker Alexander Kluge has long promoted cinema's relationship with the goals of human emancipation. Jean-Luc Godard and Filipino director Kidlat Tahimik also believe in cinema's ability to bring about what Theodor W. Adorno once called a "redeemed world."

In this film, Kluge continues his fascination with history, culture and cinema as he examines the close of the 20th century. Opening with a production of Verdi’s Tosca, he sets up a contrast between the treatment of moral and aesthetic issues in the 19th century and their examination in the cinema. Several stories – with characters who are mainly nameless, such as “The big boss, a man in a hurry,” Homeworker,” “Superfluous employee” – are juxtaposed, creating a filmic essay, a montage of ideas and reflections on the present, a present which affects our views of the past and our hopes for the future. At the center, serving perhaps as a metaphor for both his film and cinema itself, is the story of a director who goes blind while working on his latest film. He continues working, his head full of images, trying to create what he cannot see.
