With the departure of Yngwie Malnsteen, Steve Vai moves in to handle the axe duties for Alcatrazz on their follow up to a pretty sucessful No Parole From Rock and Roll. Vai wastes no time in making his mark. Gone are Malmsteen's classical runs and Blackmore riffs and in is Vai's weirdo note bending and blazing runs that are really the opposite of the Malmsteen style. But it works. It works because Vai works within the song structure and the songs are good enough to stand on their own. Vai just makes them a bit more interesting. High spots are 'Mercy", 'Sons and Lovers", 'will you be home tonight' and 'stripper' . Low spots are "Desert Diamond' and "Skyfire'. Steve Vai has always seemed to be a guitarist without any soul to his playing, no matter how technical it can be. Here he comes close to playing with soul, but again its all in the songs.

After taking it in the teeth from two of the '80s greatest young guitar heroes, Yngwie Malmsteen and Steve Vai (both of whom performed on but one Alcatrazz album each, before abandoning ship for greater solo glory), vocalist Graham Bonnett decided to anchor 1986's Dangerous Games to a slightly less gifted, but much better traveled guitar wiz in the plainly named Danny Johnson (ex-Rick Derringer, Rod Stewart, Alice Cooper, Blackfoot, etc.). Unfortunately, ironically, and through no fault of Johnson's, just when Bonnett regained control of his own group, Alcatrazz wound up delivering their least distinctive album; more consistent, perhaps, than the previous year's idiosyncratic but frankly song-challenged Disturbing the Peace (Steve Vai defined), but also "safer" and utterly subservient to the 1980s' soulless mainstream rock conventions.
