Al Wilson gets unfairly tagged as a "one hit wonder" due to his huge hit, the brilliant "Show and Tell." But as this "Best Of" compilation demonstrates, he had a bag full of other good songs too, all of which mined a delicious soulful groove. Of course this set includes "Show and Tell" but it also has "La La Peace Song" which was actually a minor hit the same year. Other highlights include "Willoughby Brook Road," "Magic of Your Mind" and some interesting interprations of classics like "I Won't Last a Day Without You" and "Born on the Bayou." One reviewer complained that this was not a true "best of" Al Wilson collection because it doesn't contain his acclaimed late 60s and early 70s material.

Today he is best known for his 1973 platinum selling album "Show And Tell," which was considered a certified soul masterpiece. This difficult to find recording is worth the search; it contains some of the finest recorded work of Al Haig's enigmatic career. Haig was an important figure in the early development of bebop piano and can be heard as a sideman on many seminal recordings from the 1940s, including Salt Peanuts and Hot House. His refined classical technique was relatively unique at the time, and he was admired as a superb accompanist. Between the mid-'50s and the early 1970s there is a curiously large gap in his recorded output evidently due to personal problems. In fact, Al Haig Today! appears to be his only release as a leader during the '60s.

By 1965, trumpeter Al Hirt was a commercial success, although from the jazz standpoint most of his output for RCA was becoming increasingly forgettable. Although he was joined by the Gerald Wilson Orchestra for nine of the 13 selections on this live LP, all of the selections (other than a six-minute rendition of "Carnival of Venice") are quite brief, with several under two minutes. Hirt shows off his technique on a variety of showy devices, but every note sounds planned in advance, whether it be "Bye Bye Blues", "Down By the Riverside" or a remake of his hit "Java".

Among all the many Chandos brass recordings, each release having played a major role in the labels successful history, this one may well be the loudest. In the vast acoustic of St Judes Church, London, rendered in surround-sound, and in the largest ensemble format to which it has ever expanded, Onyx Brass, under the energetic direction of John Wilson, brings together four dozen fanfares by fourteen British composers of the past century and a half. Including works by Arnold, Bax, Bliss, Imogen Holst Ketèlbey, and Tippett with numerous premiere recordings, this album is an unmissable celebration of stirring, brilliant, joyous, exciting, varied, sometimes military, and always optimistic music.
