Despite the fact that the band's best days were obviously behind them, a live album for AC/DC was all but completely necessary. After all, the group's first live release, If You Want Blood You've Got It, was recorded at a time when AC/DC was nothing more than a cult act that had yet to produce many of its future rock staples…

Filmed with Panavision cameras and lenses on 35mm film with 26 cameras, including one helicopter, AC/DC: Live at Donington is presented in high definition 1080p on this Blu-ray Disc release in its original 1.78:1 aspect ratio. For this release, Sony-BMG and Columbia Music Video have provided three listening options: 48kHz/24bit PCM stereo, Dolby Digital 5.1 (640 kbps) and PCM 5.1 48kHz/24bit. Because of the use of so many cameras from various distances and the differing levels of lighting throughout the performance the quality of the picture does vary, often times from one shot to the next, but this has more to do with the things I've mentioned than with the encoding. For example, in certain darker shots from more distant cameras, there is a higher level of grain present than in well-lit shots from cameras closer to or actually on the stage where little to no grain can be seen at all.

When AC/DC came crashing through the gates of Castle Donnington in August of 1991, they were headlining their third "Monsters of Rock" festival at the fabled venue. 2003 was a big year for AC/DC which included their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to European dates with the Rolling Stones, the band made several high-profile public appearances (including the SARS concert in Toronto for 200,000 people). One run of shows found the band returning to their roots and playing clubs and theaters where fans were treated to sweaty, stripped-down shows and even playing some rarities they hadn't played in years. This DVD show from Munich, Germany was filmed at Circus Krone 2003 and this disc only available on the Deluxe Edition.

It doesn't matter if you love AC/DC or hate them. It doesn't matter if you think Angus Young's bizarre schoolboy costume makes him a fashion victim or a major style icon. It doesn't matter if you think Brian Johnson is one of the greatest rock vocalists of all time or simply Rod Stewart-lite. Whatever your personal opinion about all of these pressing international issues may be, you might want to check out AC/DC Live at River Plate if only for one completely irrelevant, tangential item. Buenos Aires' gargantuan Estadio Monumental Antonio Vespucio Liberti, otherwise known as the River Plate Stadium, hosted a three night event over the first two weeks of December, 2009, that saw AC/DC perform nine sold out concerts to a thronging mass of humanity.
