The fact that they, like so many late-'60s contemporaries, were molded in the image of Cream has often been cited to diminish the stature of Irish power trio Taste. But, all things being equal, it's impossible to dismiss their fine eponymous debut based solely on obvious source of inspiration, nor, by any means, the singular talents of the band's creative and performing focal point, vocalist and guitarist Rory Gallagher – barely 20 years of age upon its release in 1969…

Man were one of the most promising rock bands to come out of Wales in the early '70s. Along with Brinsley Schwarz, they helped establish the core of the pub rock sound, but they played louder and also had a progressive component to their work that separated them from many of their rivals…

Chicago electric guitarist George Freeman was a quintessential sideman when backing bands led by Lester Young, Charlie Parker, Richard "Groove" Holmes, Gene Ammons, and Shirley Scott. This is his debut recording, done in the height of the soul-jazz era circa 1969, featuring his famed brother Von Freeman on tenor sax for four tracks, drummer Billy Mitchell throughout, and either Sonny Burke or Robert Pierce on the Hammond B-3 organ. At times Freeman's sound traces to no single individual source, though it is steeped in Chi-Town blues and a progressive stance that is apart from the Wes Montgomery/George Benson school of the day.

Socrates Drank the Conium, a.k.a. Soctrates, is a Greek rock band that formed in 1969 and got big in the '70's. They were influenced by heavy blues and hard rock acts such as Hendrix and Cream, the band melded time signatures of progressive with hard rock and blues rock, making a pretty unique sound that set them apart from other Greek bands of the time. The group has gone through many lineup changes throughout the years, but the two core members have remained: Guitarist Yannis Spathas, and bassist/singer Antonis Tourkogiorgis. The band began it's career in the clubs of Athens, most prominently Club Kyttaro. This 1972 album is their debut full length, although they had appeared on Live at Kyttaro, (1971) a compilation of Greek rock bands recorded live at the Club Kyttaro in Athens and is considered one of the best records in the history if Greek rock.
