Belgian jazz guitar legend Philip Catherine and German bassist Martin Wind come from different generations but share a common love for melodic jazz with swing roots. On this album, the two musicians complement each other perfectly: Catherine’s playing is technically unique and never seems to stop revealing new lyrical guitar sounds, but it is not merely his technique and dexterity that set him apart. What makes him unique is his acoustic guitar sound and an improvisational style based not on other guitarists, but on some of the great horn players in jazz. Wind’s bass is always strong yet elegant and lush on this collection of standards and originals.

Philip Catherine - the South German Newspaper in Munich just recently wrote that he 'plays things that cannot be heard by any other guitarist in the world today'. His partner on the bass, Martin Wind, is one of only a few Germans who made it in New York. Both are aesthetes that love melodic jazz with Swing roots. Without any haste or superficial virtuosity, but instead with complete mutual trust they find the ideal tone, the right timbre for each note, lining up sound and space perfectly.

This 1983 studio date, titled Crystal Bells here yet previously released under other titles, features trumpet Chet Baker performing within a trio setting with the Belgian duo of guitarist Philip Catherine and bassist Jean-Louis Rassinfosse. Although famously known as an intuitive musician who played by ear, by the '80s Baker's improvisation had coalesced into a beautifully logical, root harmony-based style in which one can discern the exact progressions of any given tune simply by listening to him.

The "carte blanche" proposed by Igloo gave us "Oscar", a superb creation such as he has the knack of making. The qualities which have made his reputation are all gathered here, and magnified: beautiful melodies, particularly well thought out harmonies and fabulous tones. The double-bassist Hein Van de Geyn is amazingly musical, strong and sensuous and the drummer Dré Pallemaerts, keeps close to the outlines and brings vigorous colour strokes to the many scenes.

Too often, CDs that are mostly originals offer more preening than melody. This isn't the case with The Soccerball, a delightful collection that is 76.9-percent original and 100-percent interesting. Bill Mays, Martin Wind, and Matt Wilson have recorded together before, notably on Out in PA, another fine showcase for the trio's compositional talents. Here Peter Weniger brings his soulful, funky, tenor voice to their explorations, which sometimes involve tinkering with familiar themes: the joyous title tune is loosely based on the chord progressions of Nat Adderley's "Work Song," while Weniger's "Garrigue" is an inversion on the changes of "What Is This Thing Called Love?"

Ever since the 1970's, Philip Catherine has had a decisive influence on the sound of the guitar in jazz. This period four decades has also been the time during which the guitarist has worked together with Siggi Loch, which made his the appearance of first CD on ACT feel like such a natural step. That album 'New Folks,' a duo album with the bassist Martin Wind, is now followed by The String Project - Live in Brussels . Philip Catherine is one of the finest exponents of the melodic way of playing the guitar. Having been schooled in the music of Django Reinhardt, Catherine took his playing to another level in his duo with guitarist Larry Corryell, and several albums which he made with Chet Baker constitute a major recorded legacy.

When first scribbling these notes, I thought it'd be fun to list all the musicians I've heard whose music sounded better with Martin Wind playing bass. It's a long list, a Who's Who of musicians I love. OK, as many as I can type in one breath: Dena DeRose Matt Wilson Scott Robinson Dave Stryker John Scofield Joe Locke Anat Cohen Ingrid Jensen Ted Rosenthal Bill Mays Gary Smulyan … and then some.
