Honegger was an eclectic composer whose achievement is well reflected in this stimulating compilation. Dutoit’s recording of the oratorio King David is particularly compelling: on hearing it one understands why the composer frequently returned to the formula of narrator, soloists, chorus and orchestra.

Arthur Honegger's 1935 composition Jeanne d'Arc au bûcher (Joan of Arc at the Stake) is a rather curious work: an oratorio for adult choir, children's choirs, singers, and several speakers, including one portraying Joan herself. It is like a hybrid of oratorio, melodrama, and film music, which was a fundamental influence on Honegger's style during this period, and it is immensely enjoyable if performed by confident and enthusiastic forces.

By Swiss composer Arthur Honegger, “Jeanne d'Arc au Bûcher” (1938) is an imposing oratorio. Unlike other banal versions of the myth, the libretto is a highly original creation by French poet and playwright Paul Claudel, who perfectly dramatises the last moments of the martyr's life. Honegger highlights all the anguish and tension of Joan's interrogation and subsequent execution. Originally written for actress Ida Rubinstein, an excellent ballerina and actress who was the first to perform the part, the oratorio is written as a flashback in which Joan recalls her life, just before she dies.

With Le Roi David, written when he was less than 30 years old, Honegger produced one of his first great masterpieces. In 27 numbers overflowing with astonishing musical invention, the oratorio brilliantly recreates a distant biblical past in a resolutely modern language. It enjoyed immediate and lasting popular success.

Even with the advent of LP's, Honegger's music was hard to find on records. The efforts of Charles Munch, and a few recordings which made something of a stir, such as La Danse des Morts, which was graced by the actor Jean-Louis Barrault's inimitable elocution, were more or less one-off successes. Then René Challan and Georges Tzipine came along and made Honegger's major works the centerpiece of their French music anthology, which this series of Rarissimes is gradually restoring to the catalogue. King David, which the composer himself had already recorded, and Joan of Arc at the Stake, championed in a visionary interpretation by Luis de Vocht and his Brussels forces (in a barely veiled protest against the German yoke), were unfortunately nor part of the project. Tzipine wanted to record Nicolas de Flue straight away. This is the last panel (coming after Jeanne au Bücher and the Danse de Morts) of the tryptich of oratorios from the 1940's, and the only one of the three at that time still unrecorded.

The orchestral items show Honegger’s recurring interest in music for theatre and cinema, but the highlights are the tone poem Le chant de Nigamon, about the tragic fate of an Indian chief, and his final orchestral work, the distinctive Monopartita. Constant’s performances sometimes miss the biting edge the music demands, but they are faithful and reliable, like the recording.

The artistry of Holliger (b1939) prompted Evelyn Rothwell (Lady Barbirolli) to call him 'The Paganini of the oboe' Holliger's mastery of the oboe ranges over a vast expanse of repertoire, from the baroque to contemporary – Bach to Berio and Zelenka to Zimmermann. His style is notable for its flexibility, agility, integrity and ability to communicate convincingly across the wide range of repertoire he performs. Holliger has done much to champion the oboe music of composers such as Zelenka and Krommer, and has also had over 100 works composed for him by composers including Berio, Carter, Henze, Ligeti, Lutoslawski, Penderecki and Stockhausen.
