When the original score to Rain Man finally received it's world premiere release in 2010, fans were elated that the much requested, Oscar nominated music by one of the world's premiere film composers, Hans Zimmer would finally be out on CD. Once we saw that the score was available to license, we at Notefornote Music decided to reissue this fixing the one glaring issue that fans had with that release, sound quality. Taken from a pristine digital source and tapes we had found at MGM, we feel this is the best representation of Hans Zimmer's wonderful score to Rain Man. One thing we respect is a great score and this is definitely one of the great ones of the 1980s. This has been a labor of love and we hope you agree.

Hans Zimmer is known almost exclusively for his larger-than-life action scores, so give him credit for stepping outside of his comfort zone and co-writing with Graham Preskett the country music-inspired romantic comedy effort Something to Talk About. That's all the credit due Zimmer here, however. The score is an absolute snoozer. Its gratingly folksy approach is both forced and awkward, and the melodies are all far too similar to captivate the listener's imagination.

Hans Zimmer's credit may headline The Whole Wide World, but in truth the score was written by up-and-coming composer Harry Gregson-Williams, who later proclaimed "Hans didn't write any music for [this movie]. In fact, he heard my score for the first time at the premiere." Zimmer's fingerprints are nevertheless smeared all over The Whole Wide World - bass-heavy synthesizers and bombastic arrangements are just two of his signature moves borrowed wholesale by Gregson-Williams, who also dabbles in a series of melodic contexts spanning from lush romance to epic action to Latin-inspired dance (the idiosyncratic "Sombrero"). Gregson-Williams is nevertheless too much of a novice to command any of these disparate genres with authority, and the result is a score undermined by its disjointed, often haphazard approach.

Recorded on a budget of nine musicians (after being told the plans for a full orchestra had to be scrapped due to director Tony Scott going over budget), Hans Zimmer's True Romance score features percussion instruments xylophones and marimbas to create innocent noise, a reflection of the lead characters - Alabama + Clarence Worley - in the violently dark comedy written by Quentin Tarantino.

From the 60's onward, UK producer Gerry Anderson built a unique sci-fi TV mini-empire based on "Supermarionation," his unique blend of futuristic production design and marionette "actors" that have since inspired successful ad campaigns, a loving spoof from the creators of South Park and this big-screen, CGI 'n' live actor adaptation. Contemporary film score workhorse Hans Zimmer pays loving tribute to original Anderson musical collaborator Barry Gray, anchoring his update with a faithful cover of the late British composer's original series theme, then concocting a whole slate of new cues that build on the original show's brightly energetic, future-industrial soundtrack ethos…

James L. Brooks' 1994 romantic comedy I'll Do Anything was conceived and filmed as a musical - when preview audiences hated the original cut, the filmmaker went back to the editing room, excised all of the production numbers, and attempted to salvage the remainder to create a cohesive narrative free from singing and dancing. It's therefore impossible to judge Hans Zimmer's I'll Do Anything score solely on its own merits - Varese Sarabande's soundtrack LP essentially cobbles together the instrumental themes and cues that survived Brooks' purge, but without a sense of what the composer hoped to achieve at the outset of production, one can't formulate much of an accurate opinion…

Hans Zimmer's score for Edward Zwick's samurai epic The Last Samurai mixes his own densely composed style with Japanese instruments and melodies, resulting in a brooding, atmospheric collection of music. Shakuhachi and other flutes, koto, and taiko drums make their presence known throughout the score, most effectively on compositions like "A Way of Life," which begins as a reflective duet for flute and strings before swelling into an ominous but majestic melody. "Spectres in the Fog" is another compelling mix of beauty and violence, starting with a delicate koto melody and rolling drums before crashing percussion and sawing strings turn the mood from bittersweet to battle-ready…
