Abandon is the sixteenth studio album by the British hard rock band Deep Purple, released in the Spring of 1998. It was Deep Purple's second album with Steve Morse on guitar and the last album to feature founding member Jon Lord prior to his departure in 2002. The album was followed by a successful 1998/1999 world tour which brought Deep Purple to Australia for the first time in 15 years. The album title is actually a pun from Ian Gillan – "A Band On" – and the album was followed by the "A Band on Tour". Uniquely for a Deep Purple studio album, it features a reworking of a previously recorded song -"Bloodsucker" from Deep Purple in Rock (here re-titled "Bludsucker"). "Don't Make Me Happy" was mistakenly mastered in mono, and not amended on the final release. One of the two versions of the song released on promo single was, however, mastered in stereo.

Recorded by the BBC on March 9, 1972, this previously difficult to find live show captures the classic Mark II version of Deep Purple in all their incendiary power. This performance – basically the entirety of the then just released Machine Head minus "Pictures of Home" – is easily as good, and at times better than, Made in Japan, recorded five months later.

Deep Purple continued cranking out new albums into the late '90s, despite diminished audiences and little attention from the media. But as long as they continued to satisfy their hardcore fans, those factors didn't matter; Abandon should satisfy those fans. Granted, the band isn't as young and energetic as they once were, but they are willing to try new material, which can't be said about other aging hard rockers from the '70s…

Progressive rock giants who made hard rock a fine art, and unleashed some of the greatest guitar riffs known to the world. Deep Purple survived a seemingly endless series of line-up changes and a dramatic mid-career shift from grandiose progressive rock to ear-shattering heavy metal to emerge as a true institution of the British hard rock community. Once credited in The Guinness Book of World Records as the globe's loudest band, their revolving-door roster launched the careers of performers including Ritchie Blackmore, David Coverdale, and Ian Gillan.

This two-fer from hard rock legends Deep Purple features a pair of late-period offerings. 1992's generally well-received studio album The Battle Rages On… relied on the talents of the most popular iteration of the band (Ian Gillan, Ritchie Blackmore, Jon Lord, Roger Glover, and Ian Paice), while 1994's more divisive Come Hell or High Water offered up a less than enthusiastic live set that consisted mainly of tired readings of DP classics like "Highway Star" and "Smoke on the Water."

This is the only Deep Purple album to feature former Rainbow lead vocalist Joe Lynn Turner, who had joined the previous year after the firing of Ian Gillan. Before hiring Turner, the band had considered singer Jimi Jamison of Survivor, but other obligations made him unavailable…
