Grant Geissman really stepped up his game with the release of his previous CD Say That, and this excellent recording where his finely honed jazz sensibilities come fully to the forefront. There's nary a speck of commercial filler, as every track sports an authenticity and originality that belie the derivative music he had made a living on for years. This is a fine effort with little reason to spoil with wasted critique, as Geissman himself is on top of his game, and whether he's playing with his peer group or select all-stars, the music is at a high level from start to finish. While bop does prevail, contemporary and progressive neo-bop are heard without the predictable trappings, and Geissman changes up the band per track to keep things ever interesting in the best sense of the term.

I've been a fan of Grant Geissman's for years and really enjoyed his previous CD, Say That, which was much more cool/bepop than his previous solo recordings. Cool Man Cool is another CD with a strong flavor of cool jazz from the 50's. Grant's playing – and writing – is in top form here, and while he has his own style there are unmistakable winks and nods to the styles of guitar legends like Kenny Burrell, Jim Hall, Wes Montgomery and even Django Reinhardt. As always, Mr. Geissman has a killer backup band and, as an added treat there are guest appearances by Chuck Mangione and Chick Corea. This is a joyful performance from start to finish. Very highly recommended!

Taking Beenie’s original 1992 album Cool Cool Rider and adding a heap of tracks from that era, this Trojan set is a highly desirable disc for the dancehall singer’s most hardcore fans. It’s likely they’ve encountered these tracks before, although on inferior sets with poor sound quality. The source material is still rough and recorded on the cheap, but Trojan does what they can as crucial cuts like “No Mama No Cry,” “Black Liberty,” and the title track punch out of the speakers like they did on their original Jamaican 45s. Newcomers should be warned that Beenie was more aggressive and less tuneful than he would become two years later when songs like “Slam” and “Romie” came along, and you certainly shouldn’t expect anything as smooth as “Girls Dem Sugar” since this material is much more frantic. A couple tracks from a decade earlier, when a ten-year-old Beenie scored a hit with “Too Fussy,” would have made this the ultimate early set, but it’s a small complaint seeing as how Trojan has liberated this rare material from bootleg status.

"…this beautiful two-disc set, which is really as much or more an intimate photo album as it is a collection of recordings, just underscores the obvious – Martin was cool then and he's cool now. Yeah, he could sing. His voice was a distinctive, warm and relaxed croon that was instantly recognizable, and he certainly could have had a career as a singer alone, but Martin was more than that: he was an icon, and he did comedy, acted in movies, hosted TV shows, and in general coasted through his public life as himself, that cool guy having fun and going with the flow – even if he was in a tuxedo – with a drink in one hand and, more often than not, a cigarette in the other.

At long last, the legendary unreleased Still Cool album! Producer Carl "Stereo" Fletcher had been planning this LP on his Uprising label since the late 1970's. In fact, it was nearly released in Nigeria (!!!), but due to a faulty tape machine on a trip to Lagos, it never happened. Finally released nearly 40 years later, here it is. Still Cool, like Stereo and his Uprising label, were part of the vibrant musical arm of the 12 Tribes of Israel Rastafarian group in the 1970's. Still Cool regularly performed on 12 Tribes stage shows, just check the photos in our LP & CD jackets. Four of the ten tracks on this album were released as singles back in the day, including one ("Sweeter Music") credited only to Still Cool vocalist Frankie Diamond.
