Any 1950s Miles Davis recording could easily be called a “collector’s item,” but these selections have special claims to this description. The first four offer Charlie Parker in his only recordings in support of Miles, who had begun his disc career as Bird’s sideman. The last four feature a unique Davis/Mingus encounter. In between is Miles just before launching his first great Quintet, heading two groups loaded with top talent of the “post-bop” period. Recorded on January 30, 1953 (1-4) WOR Studios, New York City and March 16, 1956 (5-7) at Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, NJ.

From the new liner notes: “The session of March 16, 1956 is one of most beautiful, laid-back, floating-on-a-cloud experiences one can have. The first time I listened to it, I replayed it three times. Side note: ‘Vierd Blues’ is the same piece that appears on Miles’s Trane’s Blues, and there credited to John Coltrane, as it was when Trane first recorded it on a Kenny Drew session, years before. Until it was combined with the 1956 date, the Miles-Bird-Sonny session lay in the vaults. Meanwhile, on May 15, 1953 Bird and Dizzy Gillespie recorded their famed Massey Hall concert in Toronto. When that record was issued ‘Charlie Chan’ was used as Bird’s pseudonym. That’s how it came to be used for Collectors’ Items.”

Jho Archer was one of Haiti's most versatile and talented artists. He was a Singer-Songwriter, and Dancer who became a world star and lived in Europe (mostly in Paris) since leaving Haiti in the 1950s or 60s. Jho Archer recorded more than 20 albums, most of them are collectors items that you're can find at some special online stores… From Africa to Haiti, from Haiti to New Orleans. By slave ship, freighter, on horseback and on foot. This is how one of the oldest form of expression - voodoo - come the newest, most fluid music - jazz. The union of the two gave a new dimension to music that has changed the meaning of each. No longer is voodoo merely a charocheristic of race's culture. Never again can jazz be a musical style of one particular country - for the sound of his marriage expresses the evolution of the whole world.

Although largely overlooked even in his native France, an avid cult has been building around Jef Gilson’s music. The eclectic Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth fame collects pressings, and journalist Gilles Peterson has praised his recordings. Composer, pianist, sound engineer, producer, label owner, Gilson played bop, modal, free, world music. Jean-Luc Ponty and Michel Portal first found their footing working with Gilson. Nathan Davis, Woody Shaw, Philly Joe Jones, David Murray, hung out, recorded and toured with Gilson. Archie Shepp, Randy Weston, Martial Solal, Steve Lacy made albums in Gilson’s studio. This album’s first four pieces comprise the Suite Pour San Remo.
