Jazz pianist Beegie Adair has given Christmas & Cocktails the subtitle of An Intoxicating Collection of Jazz for Holiday Entertaining. That should get you thinking rosemary-infused Manhattans with Martha Stewart at the Pan Pacific rather than rye and no-name ginger ale in a dirty Airstream with Cousin Eddie from National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. Yes, this one is classy, if safe and predictable. Adair’s smoky versions of “Santa Baby” and “Sleigh Ride” transport you to the kind of high-end hotel lounges where the Christmas lights are all sparkling white, the piano player wears a freshly pressed tux, and the in-house decorator has dropped a couple of grand on poinsettias. Don’t let any of that stop you, however, from listening to Christmas & Cocktails while cleaning out the mobile-home shitter.

Label: The Web Engine Records

One of the last and most popular in a long line of traditional male vocalists who emerged before the rock-dominated 1960s, Johnny Mathis concentrated on romantic readings of jazz and pop standards for the ever-shrinking adult contemporary audience of the '60s and '70s. Though he debuted with a flurry of singles chart activity, Mathis later made it big in the album market, where a dozen of his LPs hit gold or platinum and over 60 made the charts. Very soon already Christmas holidays and the label The Web Engine Records invites us to listen to Christmas hits in the performance Johnny Mathis.

Jazz, Bop, Christmas | MP3 320 kbps CBR | 51 min | 122 MB
Label: Telarc | Rel:1999

Ray Brown finally got around to producing a Christmas CD and it was worth the wait. The great bassist has seven guest vocalists plus features for tenor saxophonist Ralph Moore and guitarist Russell Malone; his gifted trio includes pianist Geoff Keezer and drummer Gregory Hutchinson. Dee Dee Bridgewater at first sings "Away in a Manger" in a traditional vein with only Keezer's fluid piano accompanying her, but Brown's arrangement evolves into a swinging gospel setting…

Part of Verve's For Lovers series, Christmas for Lovers is a suitably romantic collection of holiday songs. Included are such classic nuggets as Mel Tormé's "Christmas Song" along with lesser-known cuts like Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Looks Like December." There is a warm afterglow quality to these tracks that should appeal to those looking to expand their holiday music collections beyond the norm.

Pop, Holiday, Christmas | MP3 320 kbps CBR | 62 min | 155 MB
Label: Wildflower / Cleopatra | Rel:2013

Building on her well-represented holiday catalog, Christmas with Judy Collins is essentially a reissue of the folk artist's 2000 release All on a Wintry Night, padded with two additional songs. All 14 tracks from Wintry Night are featured here in their original sequence with the addition of a new single, the western-tinged "Angels in the Snow" leading off the album, and a stirring, largely a cappella version of "Amazing Grace" closing it out. Fans of Collins' rich, warm voice will enjoy some of the more stripped-down arrangements, which feature her singing to a simple piano accompaniment on lesser-known carols like "In the Bleak Midwinter" and "Cherry Tree Carol."

Pop, Holiday, Christmas | MP3 320 kbps CBR | 50 min | 124 MB
Label: BMG/RCA | Rel:2000

Julie Andrews' Greatest Christmas Songs goes above and beyond its title, combining holiday favorites such as "Oh Little Town of Bethlehem," "God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen," and "The Bells of Christmas" from her 1966 Christmas album with standards such as "Cheek to Cheek" and "Falling in Love With Love" from 1958's Julie Andrews Sings. Regardless of where they came from originally, all of the selections show off Andrews' buoyant, graceful voice. Greatest Christmas Songs is worthwhile for Andrews fans as well as anyone dreaming of a nostalgic yet sophisticated Christmas.

A must for any blues or jazz fan, this 15-track compilation is highlighted by several performances from Louis Armstrong – "Cool Yule," "Zat You, Santa Claus," "Christmas in New Orleans," and his last recording, his 1971 recitation of "The Night Before Christmas," which is worth the price of admission and perhaps the greatest reading of this children's perennial on record. Plus Ella Fitzgerald's "Santa Claus Got Stuck in My Chimney," Clarence Williams's "Santa Claus Blues" (with Armstrong and Sidney Bechet); Fat's Waller's "Swingin' Them Jingle Bells," and more.
