This 2-CD set puts together Vivaldi's all nine surviving cello sonatas. Vivaldi may have composed more sonatas for cello for all we know, but this is all we have left. And it is a wonderful legacy, although less known than his violin concertos, for example. Compared with the violin concertos, many of which sound rather run-off-the-mill, these sonatas sound more thoughtful and meditative.

EAC | FLAC (image+.cue, log) | Covers Included | 02:09:43 | 565 MB

Benjamin Britten (1913-76) was one of the most precocious of all composers who have the term child prodigy attached to them. Britten showed a keen interest in music from a very early age – both as a pianist and composer. He would become a formidable pianist, but as remarkable as his early compositions are (he had composed 6 string quartets by the age of 12!), very few people, including Frank Bridge could predict that he would become the 20th centuries greatest opera composers.

Earning a Grammy nomination and Gramophone Magazine's Young Artist of the Year award in 2015, Joseph Moog is one of the finest young virtuoso pianists of our time. On this release, Moog turns to Chopin's piano sonatas. Piano Sonata No.1 is a rarely heard work. It shows the young composer as yet untouched by the influences of Beethoven and the other great composer-pianists of the period. It owes more to Mozart and the late classical period.

EAC Rip | FLAC (tracks+log+.cue) | 12:00:18 | 2,1 Gb
Classical | Label: DUX Records

Tatiana Shebanova, who also features in the Fryderyk Chopin Institute’s on-going Real Chopin series (see review special, p83), gets her own complete, modern instrument (as opposed to Real Chopin’s historic instruments) cycle on the Polish label Dux. Arranged in opus order, it presents a satisfying survey of Chopin’s development, and it spares the listener from (for example) a lack of variety in the usual hour-long sequence of waltzes.
Alice Sara Ott - Chopin: Complete Waltzes (2010/2015) [Official Digital Download 24/96]

German-Japanese pianist Alice Sara Ott is a performer who appears to care more about the score and the composer than about her image and interpretations. After promoting Lang-Lang, a pianist of maximal technique but debatable taste, DG has given Ott an exclusive recording contract, and her first release, the complete waltzes of Chopin, shows her to be a pianist of taste and restraint. That is not to say that her performances here are ever less than dazzling, because she plays with supreme ease, or any less than affecting, because she brings out everything in the scores, from sparkling wit to darkest melancholy.

Drummer Chico Hamilton, who is still going strong at age 91, is a truely unique visionary. In 1955, when jazz was beginning to flourish in many different directions, Hamilton made history by adopting an entirely new quintet format which includes a single reed instrument, guitar, cello, bass and drums. The cellist Fred Katz, who would mostly play with the bow, was considered as one of the "front" players. Youg reed player Paul Horn was the second horn player of the group who replaced the inaugural member Buddy Collette. The main part of this compilation album, released in 1963, is the four tracks (Track 5 through 8) by that edition of the Chico Hamilton Quintet. The rest are taken from two earlier recording sessions. Tracks 1 and 2 were recorded in 1956 and features Hamilton's trio with the young Jim Hall, who was 25 years old at the time, and George Duvivier. Tracks 3 and 4 were recorded in 1954 with Howard Roberts and Duvivier.

Adam Harasiewicz is the winner of the first prize at the International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in 1955. He has been the juror in many international piano competitions in Poland [The International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition - 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010]. The set "57 Mazurkas" is the fruit of Adam Harasiewicz's long-term cooperation with the Polish Radio and the Fryderyk Chopin Institute. The presented inspiring album was shaped during the seventeen years of concept forming of each of the mazurkas' final interpretation. Spontaneity, full concentration and capturing the nature of the whole recording in one moment were of the utter importance for the pianist.

Features the high-fidelity SHM-CD format (compatible with standard CD player). Cover artwork faithfully replicates original one. Comes with lyrics and a description. Camel was still finding its signature sound on its eponymous debut album. At this point, Peter Bardens and his grand, sweeping organ dominate the group's sound and Andrew Latimer sounds tentative on occasion.
