Label: Josh Garrels Music | Release Year: 2016

Josh Garrels has spent more than a decade crafting music that cuts clean through. Resting in the space between accessibility and honesty, Garrels' songs wrestle with and celebrate the mystery of faith with authenticity and heart. Cultivating a genre-blending mix of folk and hip hop, Garrels' music explores themes of compassion, hope, longing, and liberation.Truly a Christmas special! I love the soothing sound of instrument and voice that Garrels has interwoven throughout his tracks a remastering of those classics we've grown up with for so long. Makes for some great hosting background music and a great listen to with a hot cup of chocolate AND coffee. Yes, both. As I listen more, I'll be sure to update this review with more on specific tracks that stand out for this Holiday season. In the meantime, happy Thanksgiving.

Acclaimed Swiss pianist and composer Stefan Aeby presents with his trio his debut on Intakt Records as a bandleader. His excellent new album "to the light" with bass player Andre Pousaz and drummer Michi Stulz has a clear, unique identity. The trio follows a free vision of minimal sound art, leaving space and time to react to each other, and to revel in the sounds. Florian Keller writes in the liner notes: "to build their multi-layered sound architecture, these three music fanatics avoid the weight of the monumental, instead using their atmospheric musicianship to create a soundtrack for the poetry of the unobtrusive.

Rita Marcotulli is a hidden gem of european piano playing. Here she explores the timbres of the piano [some thumping & various metal bits placed on the strings - often used as repeat patterns to play over] but mostly plays beautiful melodic pieces. The last track has a quirky bit of singing through a megaphone - gorgeous ! She keeps well within herself, choosing to explore sonorities and harmonies rather than speedy runs. Could be listened to at a dinner party without shocking a non-jazz audience.
