These are Landreth's earliest known recordings, half of them made in a single afternoon 1973 when he was just 22 years old, the other half recorded in 1977. They display Landreth in the wine of his youth, looking outward for inspiration, sounding more generally Southern than uniquely Louisianan. If you are seeking an album of Louisiana music, I suggest you look elsewhere. But if it is the long-lost first album of an acknowledged slide guitar king you seek, perhaps the finest of his generation, look no further. It is in your hands.

Cajun music gained national attention in 2007, when the Grammy Award for Best Zydeco or Cajun Music Album category was created…

By age thirty-nine, Blair Kilpatrick had settled into life as a practicing psychologist, wife, and mother. Then a chance encounter in New Orleans turned her world upside down. She returned home to Chicago with unlikely new passions for Cajun music and its defining instrument, the accordion. Captivated by recurring dreams of playing the Cajun accordion, she set out to master it. Yet she was not a musician, was too self-conscious to dance, and didn't even sing in the shower.

The band first started as a side project for Switzerland’s MAMA ROSIN, and Mick Collins (The DIRTBOMBS) joined them to record this album in New York. BROADWAY LAFAYETTE plays garage blues with strong cajun influences. I may not be the biggest accordion fan, but here, it fits the band’s music and spirit very well. At times, WILLY DEVILLE comes to mind (“One Thing at a Time”), and songs like “Precious” or “Zydeco Music” will take you right into the colourful atmosphere of New Orleans’ Mardi Gras while blues flirts with psych in “Girl De Hong Kong.”

The band formed in New York City and released a split EP on Norton Records with the intent to make Zydeco music the way it was intended to be made. "Subway Zydeco" is an album full of new experiences for the band. Mick Collins (Gories/Dirtbombs) taps into his Louisiana roots in this new project. He was inspired by the black -creole Blues, the Zydeco whose roots go back to the 18th century. The music arose as a synthesis of traditional Creole music, some Cajun music influences, and African-American traditions, including R&B, blues, jazz, and gospel. Melodeon, accordion and French lyrics are still the foundation of Broadway Lafayettes’ music.

A marvellous black American singer and accordionist, Clifton Chenier succeeded in forging a style all his own, Zydeco, and for a long time he was considered its sole representative. Born in the 30s, the music came from mixed Creole and Cajun cultures in French-speaking Louisiana; when Chenier took hold of the genre it was marginal and mocked by mainstream America, but in just a few years, with a series of hit albums, the man they called the “King of Zydeco” turned the music into an accomplished form of expression that everyone appreciated. This anthology from Jean Buzelin follows the history of this King’s coronation between 1954 and 1960.
