For purposes of understanding its performance, a computer system is traditionally viewed as a processor coupled to one or more disk storage devices, and driven by externally generated requests (typically called transactions). Over the past several decades, very powerful techniques have become available to the performance analyst attempting to understand, at a high level, the operational behavior of such systems. Nevertheless, the ability of computers to rapidly deliver requested information, at the time it is needed, depends critically on an underlying structure whose operational behavior is not nearly as well understood: the memory hierarchy through which data stored on disk is made available to the processor. The memory hierarchy tends to consist of many levels, including one or more processor buffer memories (also called L1 and L2 cache), main processormemory, disk storage cache memory? disk storage, and often tape. A given level is usually configured to have both a much smaller storage capacity and a much faster access time than the level below it. The data stored in each memory level is managed dynamically, with new data being brought in as needed from the level below.

Allusion to the digital world though it may be, there's a sweet, elegiac undercurrent to the title of Paul McCartney's Memory Almost Full, an acknowledgement that it was written and recorded when McCartney was 64, the age he mythologized on Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, released almost exactly 40 years before Memory…

Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach first collaborated on "God Give Me Strength," a sweeping ballad that functioned as the centerpiece in Allison Anders' Grace of My Heart. It was a stunning song in the tradition of Bacharach's classic '60s work and it was successful enough that the composers decided to collaborate on a full album, Painted from Memory. Wisely, they chose to work within the stylistic parameters of Bacharach's '60s material, but Painted from Memory never sounds like a stylistic exercise. Instead, it's a return to form for both artists. Bacharach hasn't written such graceful, powerful melodies since his glory days, and Costello hasn't crafted such a fully realized album since King of America. It's a testament to both that even if the album is clearly in Bacharach's territory, it feels like a genuine collaboration.

This is an outstanding album. Reed man Gilad Atzmon has taken five standards, re-interpreting the versions recorded with strings by Charlie Parker, added six of his own compositions, and created an original, supremely enjoyable and affecting piece of work. The album's title refers to an imagined land—the country that Atzmon envisaged when, as a 17 year-old in Israel, he first heard Charlie Parker playing "April in Paris" and fell in love with jazz and America. According to his liner notes, this is not the America that Atzmon sees today, where jazz is no longer a revolutionary music, but it is still the home of his "priests" and "heroes." In Loving Memory of America is a fitting tribute to those artists.

Just as you begin to get comfortable with something, the rug is pulled from under you. Wasting no time, John Dwyer presents the 20th album (in the 20th year of the band's existence), 'Memory of a Cut Off Head', returning to his roots as OCS. It is easy to forget (especially amidst the ringing of ears and aching of muscles after your typical Oh Sees show) that initially, OCS was a rather hushed affair.
