As if keyboardist/pianist/producer/composer Brian Culbertson hasn’t already done enough to cement himself in the hearts, minds, and souls of more fans than I even care to estimate, the music wiz goes a step further with his latest release, which is dedicated to his wife Michelle with whom he’s just celebrated two decades of marriage. The album, released on Valentine’s Day, appropriately is entitled Colors of Love and features some of the sweetest soul-stirring acoustic melodies you could ever imagine. Mind you, while his piano lines are acoustic, he still offers his usual heavy and powerful trademark funk (albeit in a slower or more mid-tempo cadence), turning to synth bass, Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer, Hammond B3 organ, drum programming, and more. So, you get the best of both BC worlds here.

With the release of Brian Culbertson’s eighteenth album, ‘Colors Of Love’ Valentines Day 2018 promises to be something special. This all original thirteen track collection has been inspired by Culbertson’s twentieth wedding anniversary that occurred in October of this year and could not be more different than his 2016 project ‘Funk!’ that was supported by a full band and featured several vocal cuts. This time around it will be instrumental only, built around the sound of his acoustic piano and, deliberately, without either saxophone or guitar as lead instruments.

George Shearing and bassist Brian Torff have perfect chemistry as a jazz duo; Lullaby of Birdland combines two of their live dates, Blues Alley Jazz and On a Clear Day, into this budget-priced two-CD reissue. The two musicians play superbly in unison, but each also reacts quickly to anything played by the other. Their series of exchanges on Billy Taylor's delightful "One for the Woofer" amuses the audience, while the wild Latin treatment of "Up a Lazy River" is every bit as enjoyable.

One of the most appreciated attributes of a great artist is their ability to take a song that is already considered a classic in its original form, and successfully take it even further. While some avoid covering artists of legendary status, Brian Owens is tackling it head on in his forthcoming project, “Soul of Cash,” covering selected pages from the songbook of the late great Johnny Cash. If the project’s lead single, “Ring of Fire” is any indication, Owens may have an instant classic on his hands.

Brian Auger was raised in London, where he took up the keyboards as a child and began to hear jazz by way of the American Armed Forces Network and an older brother's record collection. By his teens, he was playing piano in clubs, and by 1962 he had formed the Brian Auger Trio with bass player Rick Laird and drummer Phil Knorra. In 1964, he won first place in the categories of "New Star" and "Jazz Piano" in a reader's poll in the Melody Maker music paper, but the same year he abandoned jazz for a more R&B-oriented approach and expanded his group to include John McLaughlin (guitar) and Glen Hughes (baritone saxophone) as the Brian Auger Trinity…

Some records not only desire your attention, they demand it. Think of Miles or Trane or Mingus and think of just puttering around the house as the music plays. It can't be done. The grandmasters of jazz made music that required it be heard and not merely listened to. Out of A Dream is not one of those records.
