Sammy Davis, Jr. was an outsized talent. Whether dancing or singing or acting (or drumming, or doing impersonations), he spent more energy, carried more emotion, and involved himself more deeply in his performances than any other artist of his caliber. His earliest hit material – "Something's Gotta Give," "Love Me or Leave Me," "That Old Black Magic" – signalled the advent of a show-biz vocalist who could blow the roof off the joint like a blues shouter, and though Davis was impeccably refined, he was obviously channeling Broadway figures like Ethel Merman or Al Jolson rather than the mellowed, mellifluous sound of swing-influenced vocalists.

Boy Meets Girl is an American pop-music duo consisting of keyboardist and vocalist George Merrill and singer Shannon Rubicam. They are perhaps best known for their hit song 'Waiting For A Star To Fall' and for writing two number one hits 'How Will I Know' and 'I Wanna' Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)' performed by Whitney Houston. The group released their second album, Reel Life, which featured the single Waiting For A Star To Fall in 1988. With this selection, after years of writing and composing songs for other artists, the duo earned mainstream success in their own right. In the United States, Waiting For a Star to Fall peaked at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 . The song reached #9 in the UK and was also a top ten Australian hit in April 1989. It was featured in the movie Three Men and a Little Lady. Reportedly, the song was inspired by an actual falling star that Merrill and Rubicam had seen at one of Whitney Houston's concerts at the Greek Theatre.

It was hard to miss Sammy Davis Jr. during the 1960s, as he was prominent on the radio with a number of hits, as well as singing, dancing, and doing comedy on TV and acting in films. Yet the contributions of this talented entertainer have been overlooked since his death in 1990. Harold Mabern has long thought of paying tribute to him and this 2012 release conveys the joy of Davis on-stage, even without vocals. The pianist is joined by tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander, bassist John Webber, and drummer Joe Farnsworth, with a mix of songs from musicals, movies and Davis' hit records. The quartet's swinging take of "Mr. Lucky" features strong solos by Mabern and Alexander…

Recognized throughout much of his career as "the world's greatest living entertainer," Sammy Davis, Jr. was a remarkably popular and versatile performer equally adept at acting, singing, dancing, and impersonations – in short, a variety artist in the classic tradition. A member of the famed Rat Pack, he was among the very first African-American talents to find favor with audiences on both sides of the color barrier, and remains a perennial icon of cool.

Sir Bruce Forsyth looks at the life and career of Sammy Davis Jr, who he considers to be the greatest entertainer of all time. Sir Bruce first met Sammy in May 1960 when he was hosting The Royal Command Performance and Sammy was top of the bill. So began a friendship that lasted until Sammy's death in 1990. Born into poverty in Harlem, New York in 1925, Sammy Davis Jr went on the road at the age of three with his vaudeville performer father and appeared in his first movie before he was five. Broadway and West End theatre, Hollywood movies, network television, Las Vegas and performances before royalty and presidents were to follow. But given widespread prejudice during the early years of his career, he could not stay in the hotels where he performed. In addition to learning of Sammy's struggle against racism and bigotry, Sir Bruce meets up with people who knew and loved him, including Burt Boyar, co-author of Sammy's autobiography, and Lionel Blair.

A true all round entertainer - comedian, dancer and singer - Sammy Davis Jr. was born into a showbiz family and made his stage debut at the tender age of three.
His recording career began in 1954 when he signed to Decca Records and released an album that reached the coveted number one spot in the American charts. Nothing could dull his zest for performing and partying, even losing an eye in a near fatal accident only kept him off stage for six weeks!

Unlike other Rat Pack "Best of" compilations out there, which tend to be a collection of Frank Sinatra standards with a little Dean and even less of Sammy thrown in, this is a true, balanced package highlighting all three entertainers' talents equally.
