Kaya continues what has become an unspoken tradition in the evolution of Bob Marley & the Wailers discography – blending western sounds and motifs with the icons and traditions from the very core of Jamaican society. In fact, the very word "kaya" is synonymous with marijuana in Rastafarian culture. Likewise, the album Kaya could be easily construed as an open love letter or musical paean to the lifestyle that Marley so eagerly embraced and promoted.

There are countless Bob Marley compilations on the market, but what will generate some interest in this one, which is essentially a collection of his Island singles with a handful of his Lee "Scratch" Perry-era tracks added in, is the inclusion of a "new" Marley song, "Slogans," derived from a demo tape Marley made in a Miami hotel room in 1979…

The reggae artist with the greatest impact in history, who introduced Jamaican music to the world and changed the face of global pop music. Reggae's most transcendent and iconic figure, Bob Marley was the first Jamaican artist to achieve international superstardom, in the process introducing the music of his native island nation to the far-flung corners of the globe. Marley's music gave voice to the day-to-day struggles of the Jamaican experience, vividly capturing not only the plight of the country's impoverished and oppressed but also the devout spirituality that remains their source of strength. His songs of faith, devotion, and revolution created a legacy that continues to live on not only through the music of his extended family but also through generations of artists the world over touched by his genius.

Originally issued only in Jamaica, this Lee Perry/Bob Marley-produced early-'70s album saw the Wailers continue their move from their ska and rocksteady roots to a more sparely produced form of early reggae, also moving toward more spiritual concerns and aspirations toward peaceful brotherhood in their lyrics. Actually, for a Lee Perry production it's rather on the basic no-frills side, with a stark ambience highlighting the vocal harmonies and throbbing bass.

Arguably the most influential live reggae album ever, Babylon by Bus captures Bob Marley and the Wailers during the European leg of their Kaya tour in the spring of 1978. The success of this set was not entirely unexpected, however. If the universal and widespread acclaim of Live! – their first concert recording – was an indicator, all involved knew that a Bob Marley & the Wailers performance contained unique energies and a vibe all of its own.

There are countless Bob Marley collections out there, and more each year, most of them made up of Marley & the Wailers' pre-Island Records recordings done initially for the Jamaican market, and many of these are rather random, thrown-together affairs, possibly even legally dubious, reshuffling the same tracks in various configurations, often without liner notes or much annotation…

Following his landmark Natty Dread album in 1974 and his hugely successful concert album Live! the following year, Bob Marley and his band the Wailers continued to produce vibrant, meaningful albums throughout the rest of the '70s, right up until the singer's untimely death in 1981. This Island's 5 Classic Albums box set focuses on the latter half of iconic reggae singer Bob Marley's recording career, featuring his final studio albums: Rastaman Vibration (1976), Exodus (1977), Kaya (1978), Survival (1979), and Uprising (1980).
