Billy Cobham's second date as a leader was one of his better sessions. Four songs (all originals by the leader/drummer) comprise "Spanish Moss – A Sound Portrait," and, in addition, Cobham contributed three other pieces. The selections team him with guitarist John Abercrombie, both of the Brecker Brothers, trombonist Garnett Brown, keyboardist George Duke, bassist John Williams, and Latin percussionist Lee Pastora. In general, the melodies and the vamps are reasonably memorable. Cobham also takes an unaccompanied drum solo on "Storm." Worth searching for by fusion collectors.

Jazz / Fusion / Jazz Funk

Features 24-bit digital remastering. Comes with a mini-description. A solid effort that has been dismissed based upon its associations with two Cobham lemons, Simplicity of Expression: Depth of Thought and B.C., all recorded around the same time. This recording finds Cobham continuing to explore the funk genre; however, the overall mood here is quite darker and more introspective, similar to Crosswinds.

This is a live recording by the great drummer Billy Cobham with his new young band, done in Leverkusen (Germany) in November 2010 and it kicks ass! At age 67, Billy Cobham is still on top of his game and his drumming is just superb propelling the music to new heights, the band is top-notch, delivering an outstanding concert full of classic fusion and jazz-funk. One of my all-time favorite drummers!

Most of drummer Billy Cobham's recordings have featured his groups of the period, but this set for GRP matches him with a variety of all-stars. Three songs feature Grover Washington, Jr. on soprano or tenor; Randy Brecker takes a flugelhorn solo on "Taurian Matador"; and other guests include Tom Scott (on his anonymous-sounding lyricon), keyboardist George Duke and bassist Ron Carter.

Another strong album from a top funky drummer Billy Cobham. While elements of funk were always a part of his band's sound, it was now the primary focus. "Panhandler" stands out as the session's most memorable composition, while Milcho Leviev contributes nicely on "Moody Modes." Cobham fans will want to seek this out for the extended drum solo "A Funky Kind of Thing," which stands as one of the most original drum solos he ever recorded. Of particular interest here is the presence of John Scofield, who had replaced John Abercrombie.

Generally acclaimed as fusion's greatest drummer, Billy Cobham's explosive technique powered some of the genre's most important early recordings – including groundbreaking efforts by Miles Davis and the Mahavishnu Orchestra – before he became an accomplished bandleader in his own right. At his best, Cobham harnessed his amazing dexterity into thundering, high-octane hybrids of jazz complexity and rock & roll aggression.
