Each of the accomplished authors in this unique anthology chose a Springsteen title as a starting point, and in the criminally inclined spirit of the Boss, drove headlong to wherever that inspiration called. The destinations are as wildly diverse and far-reaching as the songs that influenced them. Some arrive at hope and redemption; others end up smoking in a ditch. One thing’s for sure: you sign up for this ride, and Trouble in the Heartland will transport you somewhere unforgettable.

Before he was the swaggering, stadium-packing megastar, Bruce Springsteen was a brooding introvert, desperate to strike a balance between his nuanced songwriting and the heft of his backing band. Clinton Heylin’s revelatory biography, E Street Shuffle, chronicles the evolution and influence of Springsteen’s E Street Band as they rose from blue-collar New Jersey to the heights of rock stardom. The band’s players became Springsteen’s comrades in concert, helping him find the elusive sound and sonic punch that highlighted The Boss’s most creative period, including Darkness on the Edge of Town, Born to Run, and Born in the USA. An intimate look at one of rock’s brightest stars and his legendary backing band.

So many of Springsteen's songs bring you close to the edge of a darkness where uncertainty reigns - a darkness not just on the edge of town but of our hearts and minds . . . the darkness between child and adulthood, perhaps; or between courage and fear; marriage and divorce; even confidence and self-doubt. These nineteen authors nudge us closer to an answer . . . and let us see what really is stirring out there in the shadows.
Walk Like a Man: Coming of Age with the Music of Bruce Springsteen by Robert J. Wiersema

Walk Like a Man: Coming of Age with the Music of Bruce Springsteen by Robert J. Wiersema
Greystone | 2011 | ISBN: 1553658450 | 208 pages | EPUB | 3 MB

Robert Wiersema has been a Springsteen fan since he was a teenager. By most definitions, he's a fanatic: following tours to see multiple shows in a row, watching set lists develop in real time via the Internet, ordering bootlegs from shady vendors in Italy. Walk Like a Man is liner notes for a mix tape, a frank and inventive blend of biography, music criticism, and memoir over the course of thirteen tracks. Wiersema's book is the story of a man becoming a man (despite getting a little lost along the way), and of the man and the music that have accompanied him on his journey.

The seed for Bruce Springsteen's 2005 album, Devils & Dust, were sown nearly a decade ago, when the singer/songwriter launched his first-ever solo acoustic tour (1995-96). Encouraged by producer Brendan O’Brien, he recorded during breaks on tour, exploring a classic pop sound for an album release coinciding with Super Bowl XLIII and the inauguration of President Barack Obama. Working on a Dream was Springsteen's 16th studio album released under Columbia Records in 2009. The album reached number 1 on the Billboard 200, U.S. Rock albums and U.S. Digital Albums. The single, “The Last Carnival” pays tribute to E Street organist Danny Federici, who passed away in 2008.
