The great Swedish tenos saxophonist, Bernt Rosengren, is a frequent visitor in Copenhagen, and hardly a Copenhagen Jazz Festival passes without the opportunity of hearing him either at JazzCup or one of the other small and unpretentious venues where Bernt enjoys playing jazz. Just like the man himself: quiet and unpresumptuous, not someone to flash anything -except his love of the music which has filled his life for the past half century- and even this is done quietly. And despite his life-time art grant form the Swedish government, jazz has never made him rich.

Swedish saxophonist Bernt Rosengren had already made his mark in various small group settings by the time he turned his attention to building a big band in the mid '70s. His tenor had captured the attention of many an ear in director Roman Polanski's Knife In The Water (Zespol, 1962), and his work with trumpeter Thad Jones, pianist George Russell, and trumpeter Don Cherry gave him a certain cachet within the European and American jazz scenes, but Rosengren's restless spirit kept him on the go, in musical terms. He'd already had his way with bop, post-bop, jazz-meets-Middle East hybrids and various experimental offshoots, so he turned his attention to the big band format when a thirst for something different overtook him again.

The Danse macabre the idea that Death comes for everyone regardless of status or importance has fascinated musicians for centuries. In 2011, inspired by a vast 16th c. painting by Bernt Notke in St Nicholas Church in Tallinn, the English composer Gregory Rose (b. 1948) set the mediaeval German texts which sit below each panel, turning Notkes terrifying vision into a bleak but grimly humorous ritual. The recording features the world-renowned Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir. It was recorded in the very church that houses Notkes paintings and is conducted by the composer.
