The French ensemble Art Zoyd has never been interested in creating uplifting, high- spirited music: their style is traced by an overall tendency to play with gloom and density in a contemporary chamber-meets-RIO context…

This Wim Wenders film centers around the story of two angels wandering in a mixture of post-war and modern Berlin. Invisible to humans, they nevertheless give their help and comfort to all the lonely and depressed souls they meet. Finally, after many centuries, one of the angels becomes unhappy with his immortal state and wishes to become human in order to experience the joys of everyday life. He meets a circus acrobat and finds in her the fufillment of all his mortal desires. He also discovers that he is not alone in making this cross over, and that a purely spiritual experience is not enough to satisfy anyone.

Visible only to those like them and to human children, Damiel and Cassiel are two angels, who have existed even before humankind. Along with several other angels, they currently wander around West Berlin, generally on their own, observing and preserving life, sometimes trying to provide comfort to the troubled, although those efforts are not always successful.

Bernd Kistenmacher is a German producer and musician specialised in spherical "kosmische" synthscapes. He started his career in the 80's with a handful of sonic, epic synthesized electronic efforts taking inspiration from Klaus Schulze and the Berlin electronic school. His musical releases deliver complex, achieved floating dreamy-like melodies floating throw deep cerebral spaces. Published in 1987, "Wake up in the sun" can be considered among his classic albums. He also collaborated with the drummer and synthesist Harald Grosskopf (Wallenstein, Klaus Schulze, The Cosmic Jockers…) for the long piece "Stadtgarten Live". In 1988 Bernd created "Musique Intemporelle" - a label, which, although didn't last long, managed to gain a cult status among EM connoisseurs.

On a dirty grey street in Berlin, a crowd gathers round an eccentric old woman who is performing a strip-tease. Dragged off to a psychiatric hospital, she demands cocaine instead of thorazine, tries to seduce everyone in sight, and insists that she is the legendary dancer Anita Berber, darling of the decadent '20s. Suddenly, in true Wizard of Oz style, the film departs from monochrome reality into the colour-drenched world of the woman's fantasies, a wildly exaggerated evocation of Weimar Berlin filmed in full-blown expressionist style.

Winner of Silver Bear Award at the Berlin International Film Festival, James L. Brooks' "Broadcast News" (1987) is a thinking man's film - smart, playful, and deliciously sarcastic. It is a real eye-opener. Criterion's treatment (with a top-notch contribution by the guys at Sony Colorworks) of the film is excellent. The main characters in Richard L. Brooks' Broadcast News work for a network news bureau in Washington, D.C. They invest so much energy into their professional lives that have practically none left to properly manage their personal lives. Because of the imbalance between the two, they often feel insecure and lonely, and on rare occasions even angry.

Formed in Berlin, Germany in 1987, the Caspar Brötzmann Massaker was a vehicle for its nominal leader, an acclaimed guitar virtuoso (as well as the son of saxophonist Peter Brötzmann) whose intense work summoned the spirit and power of traditions ranging from heavy metal to free jazz. A trio also comprised of bassist Eduardo Delgado Lopez and drummer Danny Arnold Lommen, the Massaker debuted in 1987 with The Tribe, a showcase for Brötzmann's dive-bombing guitar work and ominous vocals.

Winner of the Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1987, Wim Wenders' "Der Himmel über Berlin" a.k.a "Wings of Desire" tells two very different stories. The first one is about a group of angels roaming the streets of Berlin. They observe, follow and occasionally prevent humans from committing terrible mistakes. Kids can see and feel them, adults can't.
