BIG BAND THEORY was nominated for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Performance in the 37th Annual Grammy Awards.
This 1993 set debuts three new compositions by Carla Bley as well as her arrangement of Charles Mingus's "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat." BIG BAND THEORY is another of Bley's larger-scale ensemble outings, with 18 players in tow this time. Many of her mainstay players are on board again, including trombonist Gary Valente, saxophonist Andy Sheppard (a key component of the trio that played on the SONGS WITH LEGS set), and bassist Steve Swallow.
Elysium Theory is based in New York's Hudson River Valley, USA, formed in 2006 by four talented musicians, Tim Reid on the guitars, Benny Reyes (keyboards), Jeff Fister (bass) and Ted Feeney (drums, percussion). The band states acts such as Porcupine Tree, Pink Floyd and Riverside among their influences, and started to explore a sound of their own from these and other influences in their first few years. Fabio Spinella brings both educational and professional backgrounds in music to Educator's Garage Band course. Fabio received his B.A. in Music Education from the University of Southern California and his Master's in Conducting from Southern Oregon University. He has been editing music professionally for 10+ years as well as teaching courses at a variety of universities.
