They had a track included on the best-selling CD of the event.

It turns out that the cello is just about the perfect instrument to compliment the kora. The cello is legato where the kora is pointillist; it is lustrous and mellow where the kora is bright and brittle; and yet both instruments share a profound capacity for serenity, so that even as they contrast most sharply, they can remain unified in purpose. That said, in the wrong hands, a confab of cello and kora could easily devolve into a New Age snooze fest or a tedious exercise in classical music light. So the success of Chamber Music must really be credited to the remarkable musicians who created it, and to their playful, confident, and utterly transparent musical friendship.

Seven years after their previous recording, the Persian percussionists Trio Chemirani return, nourished by rich musical experimentation and by meetings with musicians from the Mediterranean, the Middle East, and Africa. Father Djamchid and sons Keyvan and Bijan have all collaborated musically with a large and diverse array of musicians over the years, many of which recordings have appeared on Accords Croises. For this new album, recorded in Paris, they put together an awesome list of invitees - kora maestro Ballaké Sissoko, pianist Omar Sosa, bassist Renaud Garcia-Fons, Ross Daly on lyra and rebab, jazz guitarist Sylvain Luc, and on bouzouki Titi Robin.

Ballake Sissoko opens his new album, “At Peace,” with “Maimouna,” his solo showcase for the kora, the West African harp with 21 strings rising vertically from a huge calabash gourd. For those unfamiliar with the instrument, its broad range, sparkling tone and shimmering effects are vividly displayed here. For those who do know the kora, Sissoko is a virtuoso who can run through a blur of speeding notes and then brake for a crisply articulated theme. On this piece, Sissoko repeats the same descending figure, but with the melodic path and rhythmic organization slightly altered each time.

When Ballake Sissoko and Vincent Segal released their first collaborative album, Chamber Music, they caught the music world by surprise. Everything about this duo was unexpected: the Malian master of the traditional harp, or kora; the French cellist with the unlikely background in trip-hop; and the elegant, soulful music they made together. The album appeared on numerous best-of lists in both Europe (in 2009) and North America (in 2011). Now, these two sonic voyagers have returned with Musique de Nuit (“Night Music”) – an album which may not have the same element of surprise, but which may be even more spellbinding than its predecessor.

One of the most important parts of any record company is the A&R Department, which discovers new talent. For smaller labels, this is even more important as sometime, they can pick up some really talented artists early in their career, and nurture them. Often, new talented artists can be found in the most unlikeliest places. An example is Idrissa Sissoko, who Boddhi Satva discovered in Mali. Once Boddhi had heard just a few songs from Idrissa Sissoko, he signed him to Offering Recordings. Idrissa Sissoko then released his debut album Lopilopilo earlier this summer. Sometimes, an artist’s life takes a few twists and turns before they get the opportunity to even release an album. For Ade Alafia Adio, whose three-track sampler O.R.G.A.S.M. was recently released by Offering Recordings, his journey to becoming a singer, songwriter, musician and poet took a few twists and turns along the way.

People like to see artists improve upon past efforts, but count it as a victory that Issa Bagayogo was able to match the beauty of 2002's TIMBUKTU. Like its predecessor, Tassoumakan features a seamless fusion of traditional Malian griot roots music and 21st-century electronic programming. Longtime producer, musician and collaborator Yves Wernert has continued to shine as the sound architect, making the sonic marriage more natural sounding than ever. The band also features hot guitarists Mama Sissoko and Karamokou Diabate as well as flutist Djuro Diallo, who does excellent work throughout.
