The legendary conductor Kurt Sanderling was always a great admirer of Rachmaninovs music. There is just one other, old recording of Sanderling conducting Rachmaninovs Third Symphony. This is, therefore, another notable release in the SWR historic series. The performances on this disc are from his Stuttgart concerts, beginning with Mussorgskys prelude to his unfinished opera Khovanshchina, the work he began after completing Boris Godunov.

Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Edward Gardner - Grieg: Peer Gynt, Op. 23 & Piano Concerto in A Minor, Op. 16 (2018)

Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Edward Gardner & Jean-Efflam Bavouzet - Grieg: Peer Gynt, Op. 23 & Piano Concerto in A Minor, Op. 16 (2018)
EAC Rip | FLAC (tracks+log+.cue) | 01:23:09 | 291 Mb

This much awaited recording offers keenly idiomatic performances of the most famous works by Grieg, played by the composer’s own orchestra, the Bergen Philharmonic, and its Chief Conductor, Edward Gardner. The drama and passion of such favourite pieces as the incidental music to Peer Gynt and the Piano Concerto are superbly captured in surround-sound with exemplary Chandos sound quality. Unlike most existing recordings, offering only the orchestral suites, this disc presents numerous extra excerpts from Peer Gynt, which follow the sequence of Henrik Ibsen‘s dramatic poem, including sections for the unique Norwegian 'Hardanger Fiddle’. Having collaborated with the orchestra on several occasions, Jean-Efflam Bavouzet is the soloist in the Piano Concerto, a piece that stands out as a shining example of a single great thought captured and expressed in music. The power of this conception is evident throughout the concerto in the pianist’s faithful, yet highly romantic interpretation.

Mendelssohn’s Op.13 and Alban Berg’s Lyric Suite: why did you choose this programme? The first, obvious reason is that we’ve been performing these two works for a long time, with the greatest imaginable pleasure. They challenge us as musicians. In Berg’s case the challenge takes us to the farthest frontiers, and in Mendelssohn it is just as formidable. That would be the outer motive.

Albert Camus once wrote 'when I describe what the catastrophe of modern man looks like, music comes into my mind the music of Gustav Mahler'. If asked to specify a particular work, it is quite possible that Camus would have proposed Symphony No. 6 in A minor the symphony that Bruno Walter claimed portrayed 'a terrifying, hopeless darkness, without a human sound'. Nevertheless, the period during which Mahler wrote his Sixth was one of the most successful and happiest of his life prior to any marital difficulties, at the time of the birth of his second daughter Anna, his professional reputation growing.
