True to form, Boston-based label Cultures of Soul is set to release a compilation of obscure disco from a far-flung corner of the world. After forays into India and Brazil, they now turn their attention to South Africa. South Africa is home to a dizzying variety of musical genres and traditions, including some that look directly to American sounds for inspiration. In the late 70s and early 80s, many of the country s best young musicians were guided by funk. All over the world, disco was growing harder and more electronic, with new synthesizers entering the market every month.

Quilombo de Palmares was a real-life democratic society, created in Brazil in the 17th century. This incredibly elaborate (and surprisingly little-known) film traces the origins of Quilombo, which began as a community of freed slaves. The colony becomes a safe harbor for other outcasts of the world, including Indians and Jews. Ganga Zumba (Toni Tornado) becomes president of Quilombo, the first freely elected leader in the Western Hemisphere.

Marco Antônio Araujo is a classic when it comes to brazilian prog, and also a highly recommended artist for anyone who likes both symphonic rock and prog folk. This work of Marco Antônio Araujo was marked by the comeback of his Mantra band. The name of the album was an homage to his son, Lucas. Three bonus tracks were added to the CD re-releases. "Brincadeira" was one of the first compositions by Araújo done in his personal style. There were several versions of this theme, but only this one was recorded. Other pieces of this theme were written but never recorded…
