Recently saw the Dexy's described as one hit wonders. Well, if 'Come on Eileen' is all you know this will show you how much you're missing. Don't expect the Celtic pop of 'Come On Eileen' though, their next best know song 'Geno' is far more representative of The Dexy's 80's update of righteous soul music - tight and punchy with the brass section upping the excitement. Best of all are Kevin Rowland's lyrics when you can make them out, and even when you can't his voice conveys the passion and drive that propelled the band; outsiders who knew their way was the right one. "Let's Get the Straight", "Show Me", "Celtic Soul Brothers", "Liars A to E", "Geno", "Breakin' Down the Walls of Heartache", "Dance Stance", "Plan B" and "Keep It" all easily surpass "Come on Eileen". The Dexy's deserve to be remembered for more than that, and their best efforts laid down a blue print that sadly too few have followed.

This collection of traditional music from Ireland and Scotland arranged for solo guitar is the result of a passionate study of the tradition by some of the finest musicians playing in this genre. Compiled by Stefan Grossman, this book includes arrangements by Pierre Bensusan, El McMeen, Martin Simpson, Pat Kirtley, Duck Baker, Tom Long & Steve Baughman. Looking back less than a century you would find this music performed on fiddle, pipes, button accordion, flutes and whistles, in solo and ensemble settings, but never guitar, even in its basic role of providing rhythm. The challenge for those who attempt to translate Celtic traditional music for fingerstyle guitar is to preserve the unique qualities which are the essence of the style. The popularity of alternate tunings in this music tends to come from two different directions.

Label: Castle Pulse | Rel: 1996

This compilation provides an excellent overview of John Renbourn's recording career up to The Hermit (1976), showcasing his ability to balance tradition and studied technique with an innovative, adventurous sensibility. Jesse Fuller, Big Bill Broonzy, and Ramblin' Jack Elliot were among Renbourn's earliest muses, inspiring folk-blues explorations like the Appalachian tune "Winter Is Gone," from his 1965 self-titled solo debut. In addition to American music, Renbourn also drew on the sounds of Alexis Korner and Davey Graham; their influence began to manifest itself particularly on his 1966 record with Bert Jansch, Bert and John, which blended folk and blues with jazz. The guitar duets from that release appearing on the present compilation nicely capture what critics called Renbourn and Jansch's "folk Baroque" sound.
