This brilliant effort by Carey Bell and his son Lurrie Bell, both of whom are blues legends, almost did not take place. Carey suffered a minor stroke and broke his hip, spending four months in the hospital. Three days after he left the hospital, he was on his way to Chicago to perform at a concert with Lurrie. Although still in a wheelchair, Carey is heard throughout at the peak of his powers, taking powerful and inventive harmonica solos along with most of the vocals.

One of the greatest talents in blues - latest since his appearance at the 1977 'Berlin Jazz Festival'. Due to severe health problems, his career never really got started. During the second half of the 1990s he had sort-of-a comeback when recording three albums for Delmark. This great set was recorded in 2000 and shows him in good shape. His vocals sound intense, mature and emotional. Still you can hear the early influence of Albert King in Lurrie's guitar soloing. Backed by a superb band, this record is one Lurrie's best in recent times.

One of the greatest living Chicago blues guitarists, Lurrie Bell's last two CDs have been about stretching him (successfully) to showcase the breadth as well as the magnitude of his art. However for this project he just wanted to get back to the solid foundation of Chicago-styled traditional guitar blues, done with his rare blend of reverence, involvement and individuality and framed largely by his working band…

Label: Blue Note

Recorded in Arizona with Calexico's Joey Burns producing, Amos Lee's fourth studio album, 2011's Mission Bell, finds the singer/songwriter in a thoughtful mood and once again wrapping his soulful folk numbers in country, blues, and soft rock. A ruminative, lazy summer day of an album, Mission Bell is not dissimilar to Lee's last effort, 2008's Last Days at the Lodge, but lacks the more contemporary R&B tracks that made Last Days a bit of a departure from Lee's more granola leanings.

Bell has a firm grasp on a folk roots sound with hints of country folded in as he sings of the dignity (and the plight) of the modern day USA working man. Following in a line from Woody Guthrie to Dylan, Steve Earle, Guy Clark and Springsteen, Bell’s songs burn with a smoldering sense of injustice and hurt, the American Dream laid bare, factories closing with folk having a hard scrapple existence. Despite the tribulations however there’s still a sense of dignity and pride, the victims as heroes. (Paul Kerr for Blabber n' Smoke)

Being a member and composer of Citizen Cain, Stuart Bell release his first solo album playing all the instruments and sharing the vocals duties with 4 others singers such as Simone Rossetti and Arjen Lucassen. The addition of those vocals makes this Cd a Rock Opera. The concept is dark in nature and explore the mind of a lucid dreamer facing the reality and the world of dreams. The music contains some new soundscapes with heavier guitars, but the main attraction is like in Citizen Cain the keyboards and piano showing the numerous rhythm changes in the music.

The place to begin discussing “The Devil’s In The Detail” is, oddly perhaps, right at the end. Because the last minute and nine seconds of this is a hidden song called “Ode To Idiots” in which Ryan Hamilton takes internet trolls to task on the snottiest country punk this side of Jason and the Scorchers. He ends it with the gleeful line: “I know you live with your mum and I’ll be seeing her again…” and in so doing shows why he just might be the best writer of pop rock songs with incredible hooks that we have right now. He showed this on “Hell Of A Day” his solo record from a couple of years ago, and now in his new band with The Traitors, he underlines it, dots the I’s crosses the T’s and delivers something approaching a classic.
