Since Bach was more than cryptic in indicating the instrumentation of what is often regarded as his musical testament, The Art of Fugue has been subjected to an infinite variety of arrangements for all sorts of instruments. Bach revised his 'Johannes-Passion' regularly: he returned to it over a period of 26 years, from 1724 until his death. It is the version hallowed by tradition, established by the Kantor a year before his death, that is presented on these CDs. However, the 1725 version, equally outstanding musically, has also been recorded complete and can be downloaded as a bonus in high-resolution sound. Comparison of the two versions reveals the underlying meaning of this matchless 'Passion'.

The year 2012 marks the tercentenary of the birth of Frederick the Great, whose political and military glory has often relegated his musical talent to the status of a mere hobby. Early in the 1780s, Mozart began attending soirees at the home of music patron Baron van Swieten, who owned an extensive collection of Bach and Handel manuscripts. Mozart began copying Bach’s fugues for his own studies and made arrangements of Handel oratorios for performance — both would provide much of the stimulus for the counterpoint in several of his latest works. This CD gives a glimpse, though only a narrow one, into Mozart’s Bach studies.

It’s amazing to think that world première recordings of Bach are possible today at all. The harpsichordist Alexander Grychtolik has painstakingly reconstructed two homage cantatas from Bach’s Leipzig years. The first, Erwählte Pleissenstadt (BWV 216a), survives only in a draft libretto and a few fragments of notation rediscovered in 2003 among the posthumous papers of a Japanese pianist. The second, O angenehme Melodei (BWV 210a), survives only in a soprano part and a separate print of the libretto for the earliest of its three versions.
