B.J. Thomas has performed during four decades, sold more than 70 million records, won 5 Grammy Awards and scored 15 Top40 Pop/Rock Hits. But all this success was achieved in the country/pop genre. At the middle of the eighties, AOR rule the charts, and he was seduced by TV soundtracks guru STEVE DORFF to record the main theme for the soap opera 'Growing Pains'. The single (a duet with Jennifer Warnes) was a hit, and B.J. understood that was the direction to take. "Midnight Minute" is the only Adult Contemporary / WestCoast / AOR album recorded by Thomas.

As part of the celebration of B.B. King's 80th birthday Virgin released the double-disc set Original Greatest Hits in September of 2005 the week B.B. turned 80. Since there have been so many comps of King's long career, all bearing titles similar to Original Greatest Hits, it's easy to assume that this collection is yet another recycling of the familiar B.B. standards from the late '60s and '70s, but that's not the case at all. Instead, this 40-track collection is one of the first American reissues to offer a comprehensive survey of his recordings for RPM and Kent in the '50s and early '60s (both sides of his debut 45 for Bullet, "Miss Martha King"/"When Your Baby Packs Up and Goes," are added to the end of the collection for good measure). While the material has been reissued extensively overseas, most notably on the U.K. label Ace, which has offered an exhaustive overview of the majority of his RPM and Kent sides, there has never been a good U.S. comp of this material until this deceptively plain-titled Original Greatest Hits.

B.J. Thomas (born Billy Joe Thomas) straddled the line between pop/rock and country, achieving success in both genres in the late '60s and '70s. At the beginning of his career, he leaned more heavily on rock & roll, but by the mid-'70s, he had turned to country music, becoming one of the most successful country-pop stars of the decade.

OK, there are a few big hits on here such as Spandau Ballet's True, Ultravox's Vienna, Blondie's Atomic, Duran Duran's Girls On Film to name a few, but my love of this mega 80s multi CD box set are all the tunes that you won't find on every other 80s compilation album around.

Only the second compilation in his long career third, if Smile, the 2003 collection of his soundtrack appearances, is counted Greatest Hits runs 15 songs, the same length as 2001's Anthology, Vol. 1: Cowboy Man. Seven of those songs are shared mainly early singles from his first two albums ("Cowboy Man," "God Will," "Why I Don't Know," "Give Back My Heart," "I Loved You Yesterday," "If I Had a Boat," "If I Were the Man You Wanted") and the rest of the compilation adds his other country charting singles, starting with 1986's "Farther Down the Line," running through 1988's "She's No Lady," and adding "I Married Her Because She Looks Like You," "Stand by Your Man," "Nobody Knows Me," "Don't Touch My Hat," and "Private Conversation." Given that Lovett is as much an album artist as a hitmaker, there are some inevitable omissions here "You've Been So Good Up to Now," a mainstream Top 40 hit in 1992, is absent, as are the Texas tourism anthem "That's Right (You're Not from Texas)" and the Toy Story hit "You've Got a Friend in Me," not to mention deep cuts like "L.A. County," "Here I Am," and "Church," among many others but as a basic portrait of Lovett's best-known material, this is a solid set.
