Jazz / Modern Big Band / Experimental Big Band / Progressive Jazz

Few jazz albums released in 2005 have given me as much pleasure as the latest release by Mathias Rüegg's big band. Sure, there has been plenty of nu-jazz, world jazz, third stream and jazz-funk (such as Soulive's Break Out, above), but Swing and Affairs is genuine jazz-jazz. Rüegg, as leader, pianist and composer-arranger of the VAO for nearly three decades, has reinvented the jazz ensemble many times over, but here he demonstrates his effortless mastery of the conventional line-up: four each of trumpets and trombones, five saxes and a rhythm section.

Two particularly spectacular personalities of the Baroque period, which was not short of exciting figures: Antonio Veracini, violin virtuoso, teacher and composer in Florence. Although he was a highly respected musician and teacher in his own time, only few of his works have survived. His nephew Francesco Maria, to whom he taught violin and composition, was a completely different type.

Good Prose is an inspiring book about writing - about the creation of good prose - and the record of a warm and productive literary friendship. The story begins in 1973, in the offices of the Atlantic Monthly, in Boston, where a young freelance writer named Tracy Kidder came looking for an assignment. Richard Todd was the editor who encouraged him, and from that article grew a lifelong association. Before long, Kidder's The Soul of a New Machine, the first book the two worked on together, had won the Pulitzer Prize.
