Carl Marsalis is a genetic variant known as a 'Thirteen', characterized by high aggression and low sociability. Bred to serve in a military capacity, Thirteens were later confined on reservations or exiled to Mars. Carl, having won by lottery the right to return from Mars, works covertly, tracking down renegade Thirteens. Eric Burdon's second and final album with War, Black-Man's Burdon was a double set that could have benefited from quite a bit of judicious editing. Composed mostly of sprawling psychedelic funk jams, it does find War mapping out much of the jazz/Latin/soul grooves that, cut down to much more economical song structures, would shortly bring them success on their own. Highlights include the soulful vamps "Pretty Colors" and "They Can't Take Away Our Music"; the 13-minute "Paint It Black" medley reflects the height of their eccentricity, and not one, but two covers of "Nights in White Satin" are absurd low points.

Unlike many cities farther north, Kansas City, Missouri - along with its sister city in Kansas - had a significant African American population by the midnineteenth century and also served as a way station for those migrating north or west. "Take Up the Black Man's Burden" focuses on the people and institutions that shaped the city's black communities from the end of the Civil War until the outbreak of World War II, blending rich historical research with first-person accounts that allow participants in this historical drama to tell their own stories of struggle and accomplishment.

Big Black Penis: Misadventures in Race and Masculinity by Shawn Taylor
English | June 1, 2008 | ISBN: 1556527349 | 161 Pages | PDF | 1 MB

How does it feel to be a black man in America? It hurts, but in a beautiful way.
So Shawn Taylor says—and a lot more—in this unapologetic and sharply critical exploration of the hatred and anxiety that American society harbors toward black men, and the fear and confusion that black men harbor toward themselves.
